That last layer in this particular design was actually a "base". Meaning that is not part of the stack, was made by using thick MDF painted black.
I'm still trying to find all my #$%%^& files!!! :duh:

Cool,
No worries!

Believe me, if the cold pressing I am doing right now doesn't work, I will probably duplicate your technique!!!!

So, on the cold pressing, I have a total of 10 clamps pressing the 3/4" MDF onto wax paper, onto veneer, onto the glued speaker bottom.  Does that sound right?  Will the MDF distribute the force enough that having the clamps primarily along the edge will be ok?

Well, barring something I can't see, it appears that the cold press method worked :D

Is there a way to "test" the joint without damaging it?  I used a paint roller to put glue on the substrate.  So, I think I put on enough, and the join line looks good...

Next, I don't have a router.  What should I do to trim off the excess veneer without damaging the veneer that should be there?
Thanks,
Ted

Oh yeah, I will try to post a picture or 2 today...

I use a new single edge razor blade or a utility knife with a new blade to trim the veneer to between 1/16 - 1/8 inch from the edge.  When trimming, cut "uphill" in relation to the direction of the grain, so if the veneer splits, it will split away from the edge.  Don't slice down through the veneer--this tends to make the veneer fold down--but keep the blade perpendicular to the veneer you are cutting and pare from one end of the veneer to the other.  Don't try to take all of the excess off with one stroke, but take it off in slender slivers, letting the cut follow the grain of the veneer away from the edge.

I then use 220 or 150 grit sandpaper wrapped tightly on a sanding block and carefully sand away the remaining excess veneer.  When sanding, orient the sanding block the same way as the razor, perpendicular to the veneer edge, and sand in one direction only, again uphill in relation to the grain direction.  Use the surface you are sanding down to as a guide and use long, slow strokes from end to end.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for the help Mark, it is working great!

Well, it has been a while so I will post my progress...

Finally some work on the speakers.  I have learned A LOT about veneering, and sadly most has been the hard way.  Anyway, here is one speaker that still will get another 3-5 coats of Poly and has some more wetsanding required.  I know there are mistakes, but it is my first time so let me enjoy them  :D

The first picture shows the hand of the reason this is taking so long  :icon_lol:

It is fun, and I am looking forward to them, but I will say part of me wishes I did N3xs instead based on the feedback from folks on this forum :duh:

Maybe I will makes Stacked BB N3Xs in the future too :)

Ok, so I am at the 100 grit wet sanding/poly steps working my way up to the 1500 grit wet sanding.  Once I have done the "final" coat of poly, do I wet sand with the 1500 again and then go to buffing compound, then polish, and finally wax?

Wow!  I like my speakers stacked, like my ladies!  Just kidding, but those are really cool.  Please keep everyone posted with more pictures.  I'm amazed by the workmanship.

Just wanted to post this picture to give people an idea of the difference between doing raw ply in oil based vs water based finish.  Hopefully it'll help some with making the decision.  Venee on the front/top is Austrian Flame Maple, basically Sycamore, but called Austrian Flame Maple when it's grown in Austria.
