Mounting the N2x tweeter
« on: 1 Aug 2010, 11:47 am »
Hi,

I'm building a pair of N2x's and I'm going to cover the baffle with leather.  I have a flat-pack that has the recess for the tweeter surround already cut but I don't have the tool needed to make it slightly bigger in order to accomodate rolling the leather over into the cut-out to make a nice finish.  I have a couple of options that would allow me to progress and I was wondering in either would negatively effect sound quality:
  • reverse the baffle and mount the tweeter and surround on what was to be the back - the tweeter surround will then sit slightly proud of the baffle (if this works, should I trim the tweeter surround or move it higher - right now the tweeter surround and woofer overlap each other)
  • mount the tweeter on the back of the baffle without the surround
Does anyone know if either of these will damage sound quality?  Which would be better?

Cheers
Will

Dont have the answer to your specific questions, but a Dremil tool isnt very expensive and you could just sand the recess a little to accomodate the leather.

The woofer is supposed to overlap the tweeter faceplate, and you don't want to change the distance between them.

I'm not sure about your second option, but I agree with Nick.  Go with a Dremil or something like it.  You can probably find someone who will let you borrow theirs, if this is the only thing you'll ever use it for.

You'll have to maintain the alignment of the drivers or it will adversely effect the response.

I suggest figuring out a way to make your tweeter hole slightly larger to accommodate your leather.
