Started with Talisker Distiller's Edition, ended with the new 110 proof Ardbeg 10.

I enjoyed the Hornshoppe Horns for a few years as they got a lot of the sound right, despite their limitations. Now I have the Tonian Labs and even though they use that forehead tweeter, it does sound glorious, even w/out that last octave and a half, or so.
But, not all widebanders are built or sound the same and there is some serious progress being made, albeit expensive ones.

Unless you listen to your speakers at a distance of 1 foot, or expect them to sound exactly the same when sitting on the floor compared to standing on a stool, the vertical spacing of the drivers doesn't matter that much...  assuming the speakers are designed properly.

That'll do it.

This topic only applies to poorly designed speakers. If a speaker is properly designed taking into consideration the correct time and phase alignment, then this become a non issue. Currently available full range drivers could never ever sound as good as a properly made multi driver speaker.

Hmmn, pretty wide sweeping statement - not sure how you would define "sound as good".

I define it as what I keep in my listening room - but I only need to make me happy.   :D

Only true if you listen to them on the axis that these time/phase alignments are designed for.

I have to admit.... I'm not a full ranger.   I like the tweeter on my forehead.

Time and phase depend upon location.   Do you ever move your head?    If not....  I can design you an almost perfect time and phase aligned system.  ;-)

We build speakers the way we do because full range, wide dynamic range, lower distortion are easier to come by with multi driver systems.

There are other ways to get around (at least to a large extent) the problems associated with multi drivers.

D'Apolito arrays, Theil's concentric drivers, MBL's technology and others.

For me, the trade offs are too great with single drivers.

So what's the big deal? Listen to them on axis and the problem is solved. Full range drivers sound worse than a clock radio off axis, so multi driver speakers still win regardless and win in spades.

The best speaker systems are MTM and MTTM types. That is again if they are properly phase and time aligned.

Well, all speakers suck.  Just their nature.

I have a tweeter aimed at my forehead with an 8'' midwoofer slightly above, and another identical one slightly below. :)

The beauty of a line array is that you have a tweeter at your forehead, one at your shoulder, one at your ...etc. etc.

As far as Nagy's comment "The best speaker systems are _______ and _______"  My experience is that the "best" speakers are those that give you the most pleasure when installed in your room.

I guess that pretty much eliminates Goldmund speaker systems.

The subject line of this thread caught my eye because I also see speakers as having some sort of human personality and presence to them, like two friends sitting in the room with you.

Maybe if we replace "the best" with "my favorite" things would make a lot more sense.  :thumb:

Either that, or some chemically-induced dream or Jim-Morrisson like trip. Scratch that...it was only scotch.

In keeping with the literal-mindedness of part of this post, my girlfriend so kindly let me use one of her photos to realize the concept.  ;)
