"White Bird" by It's a Beautiful Day
"In My Room"  Beach Boys
"Get Together" Jesse Colin Young
"You Were On My Mind" by We Five

and 1,000 more by the Supremes,Temptations,Byrds, all the psychedelic bands.
Driving with the top down ,8track player blasting, just a sad reminder of how the shadows have lengthened.

From Bob Dylan's stunning LP "Time Out Of Mind" from the song "Highlands" these few words.
"I see people in the park forgetting their troubles and woes
They’re drinking and dancing, wearing bright-colored clothes
All the young men with their young women looking so good
Well, I’d trade places with any of them
In a minute, if I could.

Later,
 Bill

A good song at the right moment under the right circumstances....

In the summer of 1970 Julie and I were still on our honeymoon. We went to a movie in Westwood CA then wandered around town. Naturally, we ended up in a record store. They were playing "Sweet Baby James". We had never heard of James Taylor but we bought the record and the song instantly became our song. I can hear the music, picture the album and relive the moment anytime I want to feel young and romantic again. There were lots of great songs before and have been since, many of them better than this one, but none of them conjure up our early happiness like that one. Next year, when we celebrate our 40th anniversary, we'll lift a glass to J.T.
Nice post, CSI.  I can't remember my time without romantic nostalgia being part of it.  Black music was the youth music of when and where I grew up, the 50's in North Dallas, Texas, amen.  In The Still of the Night by The Five Satins, or Sincerely by The Moonglows.  Freddie King was a god.  Of course, not all white kids were into R&B, but the anti-establishment ones were tho we didn't know it at the time.  Used to go to R&B revues when they came to town.  The only white band I remember hearing at one was Bill Haley.  Pat Boone was from north of there.  You should have heard his covers of Little Richard tunes.  I mean what a joke.

If you're talking my "real youth" then Bubblegum music was what was in at the time. Songs like "Red Rubber Ball" (I think this was Paul Simon under a pseudonym) or "123 Red Light"?

Anyone remember this one (I know bunnyma357 does):

Little Willie-Willie won't
go home
But you can't chase Willie cause
Willie won't go
Keep tellin' everybody but
Oh no
Little Willie-Willie won't
go home

Depending on the stage of youth -
childhood: Unforgettable - Nat King Cole
                Chances Are - Johnny Mathis
Throw in Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Les Paul & Mary Ford, Mel Torme, and others too numerous to list. Would have to research for specific cuts. The memory isn't what it once was.

Thanks jimdgoulding. I was never a Pat Boone fan and you are right. His covers were laughable. But whether you agree or disagree with his politics, he did have a pleasant voice. My favorite Pat Boone story happened on a TV talk show. It was during the Vietnam war and the producers booked Boone and Joan Baez on the same show, obviously hoping for some political fireworks. Each performer did a brief tune then were seated next to each other on the couch. They both knew two things: that there was nothing they would agree on politically, and that they each had too much class to get suckered into a public fight over the war. After a few moments of awkward silence the host, I think it was Dick Cavett, suggested they might sing something together. They looked lost for a moment then Baez said she knew the song, "Muddy River" that Boone had on the charts at the moment. She picked up her guitar and they sang an unrehearsed chorus together. Now here is the fun part: their voices blended together so beautifully it still gives me cold chills when I think about it. Everyone was surprised, especially the two singers. I sure wished I had a tape recorder running.

+1 with BobM on the bubblegum.

I think I moved onto 'real' music, ie Rock, with Steely Dan - "Reelin' In The Years"

Song still gives me a chill.

Pretzel Logic, a great arrangement and tune, IMO, reminds me of 50's R&B.

The Cyrkle was a short-lived American rock and roll band active in the mid-1960s. Though not officially a one-hit wonder (the group charted two Top 40 hits),
they are best known for their 1966 version of the song "Red Rubber Ball," which reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and still receives significant airplay on
oldies radio stations across the United States.
Red Rubber Ball" is a pop song which became a hit (going to #2 in the Billboard Hot 100) in the 1966 version recorded by The Cyrkle.
It was co-written by Paul Simon (of Simon and Garfunkel) and Bruce Woodley (of The Seekers).

Bob the second top 40 tune was "Turn Down Day"
And of course The Sweet

Have a good time the Rave..................Bill

I think it's "Reflections of my Life"?  Yes, I remember these.  Just out of Vietnam and out of the service.  My youth had vanished at that point however.  Great songs from that era though.  However, if I remember correctly Armed Forces Radio played a lot of Buck Owens.....I nearly shot myself! :D

Everything from this old timer was like fire...the best unknown known soul singer/songwriter from the 60's and 70's.
He sorta hit it big with his 1970 'Total destruction to your mind' album.
He also did a version of "Sam Stone" which dealt with the effects of war (Vietnam) on a soldier.

MacArthur Park - Richard Harris version. It blew my young mind over and over.
We Can Work It Out - The Beatles, I remember the first time I heard it. Was waiting in the car for my mom when it came on; I was mesmerized.
Like A Rolling Stone - Bob Dylan. Another one that blew me away the first time I heard it.
Too many more to mention.
