Why isn't Rush in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame???
« on: 17 Jul 2010, 05:57 pm »
While I can understand that Rush's music isn't for everybody, they have been one of the most successful bands in the history of music, yet seem to be constantly overlooked.

On top of producing killer music, Geddy Lee and Neil Peart are widely regarded as being near or at the top of their field in terms of musicianship (and Alex Lifeson is no slouch on guitar) and ability.

Over the course of their career, Rush has come to release 24 gold records and 14 platinum records, placing them within the top 3 for the most consecutive gold albums by a rock band.  Rush also has had gold records in four different decades (soon to be five with their next album).

I am biased since Rush is my favorite band, but I still have to scratch my head as to why they aren't in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and why they don't get the credit that they have earned and deserve.

BTW, if you want to see one of the best done rock and roll documentaries produced, check out Rush - Beyond the Lighted Stage.  This documentary is well produced, has great sonics, and does a great job telling the story of Rush's successful, multi-decade, career.

I didn't realize they weren't.  They seem like an obvious choice.

My favorite Rush studio albums in order are:

2112
Hemispheres
Moving Pictures
Signals
A Farewell to Kings

One of their live albums gives you a broader exposure to the band and their music - here are a few of my fav's:

Exit...Stage Left
Rush in Rio
Snakes and Arrows (Live)

Lastly, you could buy one of the compilations:

The Spirit of Radio: Greatest Hits 1974-1987

Probably Moving Pictures since it is their biggest selling album.  Also I saw them on this tour when I was in high school and it was a blast.  So, I am biased.

Moving Pictures is a good album, which you can now get re-mastered. But the original sound quality is very good. IMO Camera Eye is Rush's best song and its only on this album.

All the World's Stage, is my favorite Rush album. I cater to their early work in the '70's. I don't like their newer style as much and haven't purchased any recent albums, accept for Greatest Hits stuff.

I though Rush in Rio was a bad recording on the first half of the concert. They didn't have much time to set up IIRC. You can tell they were making sound adjustments as concert progressed. The opening Tom Sawyer sounded awful IMO.

I was fortunate to see them live twice back in '79,'80. I think what stood out the most was their precise timing, as opposed to other bands I've heard. :smoke:

Wait, Rush is a real band???? I thought they were one of those spoof bands like Spinal Tap.  all these years of laughing at their silly songs about fictional characters from novels etc. Plus they're Canadian so... :P

Just gotta give Rush fans some shit. They're really not bad, I'm not sure what particular traits Rock n roll hall of fame requires.

RUSH is not in the Rock-n-Roll hall of fame because the lunatics running the show DO NOT know what Rock-n-Roll is!! PROOF: they put a slut like Madonna in it.   seriously. Madonna is in the Rock-n-Roll hall of fame.

What an outrage!!!!

I see Rush has never even been nominated since they 1st came eligible in 1998. Pretty hard to see them making it if they can't even earn a nomination status. Is there an antiCanadian stigma here?

And they are all virtuosos in their instruments, Neil Peart are one of the best rock drummers I see playing.

For me, Rush is a weird band.  On one level I can appreciate their skills on their respective instruments.  But for some reason, they always give me a scary vibe.  There's this fierce, martial feeling to the music, almost like theirs is the kind of music that would have been used to whip a Hitler Youth Rally into a frenzy.  (And I don't say that to be critical, or to suggest any Nazi connection to the band.  It's a purely emotional response of mine).

Over the course of their career, Rush has come to release 24 gold records and 14 platinum records, placing them within the top 3 for the most consecutive gold albums by a rock band.  Rush also has had gold records in four different decades (soon to be five with their next album).

Fortunately, their extreme wealth and worldwide adulation is likely reward enough for them.  I suspect that Hall of Fame status is more important to fans who are vying for some kind of bragging rights.

On South Park comics, Rush was showed as some freaky guys from Canada, on the other hand the innocuous guitarist Peter Frampton appear as a rock star.

Great band - and great concerts (I've seen them twice...once a warm-up for Blue Oyster Cult - I remember so many afterward were scratching their heads about them saying how amazing they were).

Lots of different messages from them in their tunes than the normal drivel you hear from other musicians wailing about various forms of 'oppression', lost love, racial divide, poverty, etc.

I always found them enlightening and thought-provoking....as I do in a different way from Ben Harper, Sting, Tori Amos and few others.

I do not know a better prog rock band in North America area.  A shame there is no one Rush album on SACD format...

Really(?) You sure you're talking about Rush(?) Which of their songs gave you that vibe?

I could understand you geting that vibe from "Rammstein", but "Rush"(?)

Geddy Lee is the son of Holocaust survivors, his music is anything but militant.
