It's not dead, it's the walking dead. Keeps moving due to incredible efforts made by the "entertainment" industry to push it down our throats with their ever "improving" DRM schemes.
Here true story. I wanted a solid "business" type of notebook (no intention to play games on it) so I've recently ordered a Thinkpad T510. I was curious if I could somehow use it too for playing music through a BDA-1. Bad luck. It outputs digital audio only through its "DisplayPort" connector. Which the BDA doesn't have one. Of course, there are some Displayport-to-HDMI adapters, however the BDA-1 doesn't have HDMI either. Good old Napalm investigates further and finds this:
http://www.samsung.com/us/consumer/office/monitors/premium/LS25EMNKUY/ZA/index.idx?pagetype=prd_detailSo in order to do something as simple as play a CD through a BDA-1, I need to connect the notebook -> DisplayPort to HDMI converter -> monitor HDMI input -> monitor toslink out -> BDA-1.
They complicated all these digital connections and standards and DRM schemes to the point that they are barely usable if at all. You know what. Either "the industry" comes out with something usable or I'm not buying any more of this.

I am tired of this endless "entertainment" in scouring for the right combination of adapters and connectors to make things work.
Digital shmidgital.
