WTB - Zigmahornet speakers
« on: 5 Jul 2010, 05:54 am »
Our best friends daughter is dating a young gentleman who loves music but is trying to put himself thru college so his funds are limited.
The speakers I have on hand our way to big for his room so I recommended these, either to build them or look for a pair from someone who might be willing to sell.
Please let me know if you know of someone who has a pair that would be willing to part with them

 Thanks,
 Bill O'Connell

I bought a pair for a friend, but he hasn't paid me for them yet. Send me a PM.

Bill,

I'm getting very close to finishing mine, but I probably won't be selling them.  One of the best speaker bargains on the planet, IMO and a really great recommendation to your friend on a budget.  Everybody should hear these at least once to see what you can do with a little effort and around $100.

If I had time I'd offer to build a pair for you, but I have my own to finish, 2 amps under construction and a third about to start, then the Cornwalls to rebuild, etc., etc., and that's just the hobby time.

Truly wish I could help,

Jim

Same driver, less wood, better performance (IMHO)

Hi Dave & Jim,

I did find a pair searching of all places Craigslist.
The gentleman I bought them from used 3/4 inch Baltic Birch but kept the inside dimensions to spec.
He did not use the Merrill drivers but the Fostex and if I'm not mistaken said they were FE103's.
We hooked them up this afternoon to our little MiniMax 8 watt integrated and even though amp & speakers wire were all brand new, after about an hour they started to sound very good.
On my way home after running a few errands my friend called me up and he heard breathing from the music and thought somebody else came into the room.
Great speaker for the $100 spent. :thumb:

The FE103 is the driver intended by the designer... and the better of the 2 choices from my experience.

Why?  How are they different?

Bill,

Wow, great find, and that 6bm8 amp should be absolutely sweet with these speakers.

Actually, the zigmahornets were originally designed for the 103 sigma (hence "zigma", which is basically unobtanium.

Wind, the fe-103s sound better because they have poly cones and not real paper ones ::.  I've heard them both and IMO there's no contest, but I have an aversion to poly cones, regardless how competent the rest of the design may be.

The Merrill drivers -- originals and new production are phenomenal drivers for their price and size.  I sent mine to Bud P for some polka dots and he had nothing but nice things to say about them, including that he didn't need to do any seal coat on them and just did the polka dots.  I haven't listened to these yet, so folks, please don't ask me how the EnABLed ones sound as I don't know yet.

Note that I'm not saying the fe-103 is a poor choice and I suspect that most people would not hear much of a difference, but I'm a tone and dynamics freak and the Merrills get that a bit more "right" to my ears.

In any case, my original statement still applies and these are the best sonics to price speakers I've ever heard.  Listening to Hot Tuna live these speakers reproduce the entire spectrum all the way down to the open E string on Jack Cassidy's bass with a tone, clarity, and articulation like some speakers that are orders of magnitude more expensive would be envious of.  They won't punch you in the gut, but even down to 40 Hz is there and clearly audible and superbly well defined.

Nuff said.

Over and out,

Jim

Actually Jim is mistaken. FE103 have the same banana paper cone as all the other e-series FE drivers.

Both the DCA4 & DCA 5.5 i got are fairly cheaply made, particulairily the baskets. They do have a very sexy cone. Some sort of coated paper. Not very efficient and with a Q > 1.0. The last meaning that the best box is usually just a big one. They sound OK but don't grab me.

Can you even get the DCA any more? I see yeo is no longer selling them.
