Bill,
Wow, great find, and that 6bm8 amp should be absolutely sweet with these speakers.
Actually, the zigmahornets were originally designed for the 103 sigma (hence "zigma", which is basically unobtanium.
Wind, the fe-103s sound better because they have poly cones and not real paper ones ::. I've heard them both and IMO there's no contest, but I have an aversion to poly cones, regardless how competent the rest of the design may be.
The Merrill drivers -- originals and new production are phenomenal drivers for their price and size. I sent mine to Bud P for some polka dots and he had nothing but nice things to say about them, including that he didn't need to do any seal coat on them and just did the polka dots. I haven't listened to these yet, so folks, please don't ask me how the EnABLed ones sound as I don't know yet.
Note that I'm not saying the fe-103 is a poor choice and I suspect that most people would not hear much of a difference, but I'm a tone and dynamics freak and the Merrills get that a bit more "right" to my ears.
In any case, my original statement still applies and these are the best sonics to price speakers I've ever heard. Listening to Hot Tuna live these speakers reproduce the entire spectrum all the way down to the open E string on Jack Cassidy's bass with a tone, clarity, and articulation like some speakers that are orders of magnitude more expensive would be envious of. They won't punch you in the gut, but even down to 40 Hz is there and clearly audible and superbly well defined.
Nuff said.
Over and out,
Jim
