I remember hearing a song called "Special" years ago by a band called Garbage that I thought was pretty damn good, but never really followed up on it.

 For some reason, I decided to investigate them recently on Youtube. Some great stuff.....from ten years ago! Hell the band is no longer together. How did I miss this?

I can't believe they were not more well known. Terrific pop songs, and the female singer was not only a good singer but really pretty. Sure as hell better looking than Lady Gaga.

Well, they may no longer be considered 'hip', but I like 'em. I'm going to see if I can find some vinyl versions or DVD (which might be even better for obvious reasons)

I never feel embarrassed. Rather, always thankful. It happens all the time, especially as I spin more jazz and classical.

Garbage had quite a bit of chart action: 4 US Top-20 records (highest came in at #4). Seven Grammy nominations as well. I too was a little slow on the uptake with them. I somehow missed the first record. Then I heard "I Think I'm Paranoid." Man, that is a slammin' track.

I don't think I can say Radiohead and Pink Floyd in the same sentence, but besides that, I feel that when I discover bands, like Klaatu, I ask myself, where are the "marketing geniuses" in all of this?

I listened to "Beaker Street" (forgive spelling) from Little Rock Arkansas, and they played anything they wanted to. That, in the time, was how important radio was to new music. No airplay, no sale.

Yeah, I'm pretty happy if I'm only ten years late, I was a couple hundred late on Bach...  . 

Actually I'm always thankful when I find any music that I love and doubly so when I like the whole cd and play it over and over again.

I only feel this way if I could of been seeing the music live. If I missed out on some in person memories, I'll be a little bummed. Other wise, Im excited to have something new to latch onto for a while, music wise.

Well, on review, this was probably a pretty stupid post. Yeah, when it comes to jazz and classical, it may take a lifetieme to even discover the genre.

But this was a fairly big pop band that I just missed. I suppose part of my problem, is I don't listen to music on the radio anymore....it's all NPR all the time.

Looks like the new way to break out music is via social network sites on the web. Gotta say, I don't go there much either.

However I did check out that vid of the 13 year old kid doing the Lady Gaga "Paparazzi" cover. Kid not only has a good voice but a terrific  feel for time and rhythm.

Man, Warhol's prediction of "15 minutes of fame" seems more true than ever now.

Exactly!    There's nothing stupid at all about a new discovery,,, just appreciation for the find. It's the only way to look at it and more importantly, to listen to it.

Start with their self-titled debut from 1976, Ed. When it came out there were rumours (wrong but amusing) that it was secretly the Beatles having a reunion. Could be hard to find, though.

Do you feel stupid when you 'discover' a band 10 years later?

Stupid? Never. More like elated.

As I mature (not quite there yet) I've widened the types of music I enjoy. And have been finding older music in R&B, folk, blues, and rock that I was oblivious to during my younger days. Just happy to have 'found' them!

Missing? I have missed twenty five years... Back when MTV was only music videos 24/7 I was up on new music. On the weekends  Atlanta station, added in with all night videos. Then, they all stopped. I stopped, around 1986?? So then I was into Jazz, and that is really mostly old stuff 1930's to 1970's. Lately, (about a year ago) I decided I needed to catch up in Rock. I have bought about a thousand Rock CDs, and about 500 Lps  (used,) and using All Music Guide as a means of picking, have been catching up something fierce. Garbage is a good band. Picked up most of thier stuff for a buck each.
So being behind the times.. I am STILL time warp back in the late 90's early 2000...  Eventually i will know what is happening today.

I picked up my first Beatles and John Cambel albums and both are in my default playlist with Band of Skulls, Phoenix, NIN, Radiohead, Floyd and a number of other bands I play endlessly.   I really enjoy discovering or to re-discover older music.   I even enjoy finding new genres. 

There is so much music to be heard and I recoginze that my tastes are constantly changing.   I would feel stupid if I was locked into one decade or genre of music and as I might not verbally say it but I wouldn't respect someone stating only 80s rock is good.     Which is the one decade I least appreciate but there are great artist to discover in all genres and decades.

I know what you mean.  Sometimes I just tune out because of all the noise and miss the few gems.  There is nothing like seeing them live...  I just discovered a great "young" singer who's first album was 1991.  She's almost my age...

Well, there was a time in my life when I was doing ad photography, that you had to keep up w/ the the latest thing. It was just expected that when clients came to the studio that you knew what was hot in music/art/fashion/etc. Now that I'm going in a different direction, I've sort of dropped the ball on that.

There were other bands I knew about but never gave them a second thought until many years later. I really don't know why, perhaps for a time, all I was listening to was art rock to the likes of Yes, King Crimson and Pink Floyd. Then I picked up the Cars greatest hits and now I have every album and some of Ric's solo stuff. I also had the same thing happen with Billy Idol. I just thought he was a record companies "Milli- Vanillli" variety, until I bought the first album and started working my way up. Now I'm of the opinion that every collection needs some Billy Idol in it just to round off the sharp corners.

The biggest stumble was Roy Orbison. I thought this guy was a bozo. He looked goofy, and I thought he was just a country music guy (which is a style of music I can't stand), so he was totally ignored. Then one night I saw him on PBS with the likes of George Harrison, Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, Jeff Lynn and Bono (perhaps others I forgot). So I picked up Mystery Girl. All I can say is that I never, ever realized the true genius of this guy and apparently, neither could other greats, so I missed all of him while he was still alive.

I used to be stuck on artists from the 60's, 70's and 80's with an occasional band form the 90's until I made the decision to get back into vinyl in a serious way. This led to hanging out in a local record store which led to hearing some new music. I discovered there are some terrific new artists putting out really good music. When I discover I band I missed I might have a moment, but I am quickly grateful that I am able to enjoy an addition to my collection.
