Need help for Jolida 801
« on: 22 Jun 2010, 04:52 pm »
I´m writing you from Costa Rica, Central America, I'd writed before directly to Bill from Response Audio, but due his family issues think is better not to distract him of what's really important.
Beside that, english is not my mother language and i´m afraid i can´t explain my self well , hope you´ll undertand it.
Ok here´s the question: I recently bought a JD801A amp, and i´m loving it, the thing is that i need it to handle mid and hi frecuencies, leaving the lower gap to a self powered sub, the electronic xover that i have needs that the integrated amp have a pre out and a main in to filter it, the matter is that the 801 doesn´t have a main in, can i use the tape in to achieve that goal?
Thanks for your attention in advance.
This is the back panel layout:

P.S. Sorry about my english

Hi casarman,

First, welcome to AC!

Second, what inputs and outputs are available on the electronic crossover?  I looked at the pictures of your amp and it appears to only have one selector for input, you would need a second selector to send the source to the fixed outputs then that would connect to the crossover and back into the tape input.  Can you connect your sources to the crossover directly and select the one you want to listen to there?  If so then you would just connect the crossover outputs to an input on the Jolida for the treble and mid frequencies and the bass output to your powered sub.

Does that make sense?

PS - Your English is not that bad so keep the posts coming!

Thank u all for the quick answer.
Well; the xover have two inputs and three outputs, one for each frequency range, in the fornt panel it have four selector knobs to cut the frequencies, and three volume knobs, idem to each range. So I can connect the TT and the CDP to it, but then are two issues, 1- I´ll have to use at least two volume knobs, 2- I feel that it will loose the spirit of having tubes preamplification .
Anyway I think that I´ll need to buy a tube preamp, and then problem solved .
And YES Jake and Gustavo, they´re hackey sacks, since they´re sand balls are quite good to avoid vibrations, and also they look kind of funny, whish at the end is the final goal of this hobbie, have fun!
I post a pic so you can see under the CDP in the second space fron top to bottom, the xover front panel layout.
Cheers!

Hi Armando,

I understand better now and see that my suggestion will not work.  If you add a tube preamp you will lose some of your system's simplicity which may also degrade sound quality...maybe.

You are using a standalone phono preamp, correct?  I ask because I don't see a phono input on the Jolida.  If you are then just use a separate high quality selector like one of these,
http://www.goldpt.com/sw4.html
Note the Line 4/Aux input can be reconfigured as a second main out with some internal jumpers.  You could connect your sources to this and just use one input on the Jolida.  Outputs on the selector would go to the crossover and/or the subwoofer and give you the split frequencies you are looking for.  Cheap and simple.

Sources ==> Selector ==> Crossover ==> Highs & mids to Jolida ==> Main Speakers & Crossover ==> Sub
OR
                    Selector second output ===>Sub

Does that make sense?

Ok I see the point, very klever solution, I´m not sure I can find that specific selector in my country, but I remember the Marantz dealer have a selector whitch switches between one phono and one line inputs, maybe I should try that. Are u sure that this arregement will not degradate the sound?
Answering your question, well the Denon DP-300F TT have a built in preamp selector, that allows to change the gain of the unit, thats what I use.
Thank u very much for your help and patience! :thumb:

It is possible that anything added to the system might degrade the sound.  I am pretty sure the Goldpoint products are of very high quality and thought it would be a simpler solution.  But it does add extra mechanical connections and so would a separate preamp.  The Goldpoint products are available via mail order.  I am not a vendor and have no commercial connection to Goldpoint, it was jut the first thing that popped into my head.

If you can borrow a tube preamp to try it might be just the ticket.  Bill at Response Audio may have a better solution than any of my suggestions.  One positive side of the separate tube preamp is if you decide to upgrade to a separate tube power amp later you are ready for it.

Thanks Jake, I´ll try with the source selector, and will tell u how it sounds :eyebrows:, the primal goal is make the Jolida handle the mid´s and hi´s, then I´ll try to improve my speakers rather than the preamp.
Cheers!
Armando!

Just trying to help , Armando.  I notice Bill is active in his circle here on AC with postings just yesterday.  I think you should ask him directly as he may have better solutions.
