Interesting, I don't agree with many of the suggestions here for my own idiosyncratic reasons, but I have to concur with Mag's opening -- Deep Purple's Made in Japan is just totally captive of a band live and having a blast on stage. It's always been my gold standard for a live rock album. And Blackmore is on fire too. Many editions out there...the Hoffman gold is great but the later Glover remastered version form the original tapes is probably the best around if you can get it. But hell, my 70s vinyl version still sounds brilliant.

Not sure if there was something in the water in the early 70s but Van Morrison's Too Late to Stop Now, from 73-74 is equally indicative of an artist at the top of his form with a top class group of musicians. Once I put it on, I cannot stop til I hear it all!!!

Sound quality have anything to do with it?   Some my my favorites aren't exactly 'audiophile quality.'

Jimi Hendrix - pretty much all of them
Metallica - Live Shit: Binge & Purge (except the 2 hour Seek & Destroy)
Pearl Jam - Live on Two Legs

Metallica has pretty much all their concerts in the last decade available on their website to download.  I've got 2 that I paid for that were FLAC downloads.  You can also download CD label art and CD case art.  They have a bunch of old concerts from early days for free, as mp3 only.  Sound quality is awful, but some of their first concerts were very cool if you're a Metallica fan.

I think a lot of bands are now offering concert downloads too.  Phish is offering them in a lot of resolution options.   Their highest res ones (192/24?) are way too expensive IMO.

Scott,

I ask for selfish reasons. . . No Pink Floyd on that list (especially considering DVDs)???  I will make it a goal to be at your place some time this summer, regardless.

There you go, Scott!  I saw some DVDs mentioned, and why shouldn't they count?  You can always just turn the TV off, if you want to be all traditional.

Here are some of my favorites (in no particular order. . .and yes, I do listen to other bands! :P  Most are DVDs.)

Wilco - Kicking Television
David Gilmour - In Concert (Floyd-light) (DVD)
David Gilmour - Live in Gdansk (DVD and CDs)
David Gilmour - Remember That Night (DVD. . .same tour as the Live in Gdansk)
Pink Floyd - Pulse (DVD and CDs)
Pink Floyd - Is There Anybody Out There? (The Wall Live - '80-'81) (Has 'When the Tigers Broke Free' along with extended solos on ABITW pt. II, Mother, and Comfortably Numb.  Just awesome!  Can't wait for 10/30/2010, when I'll be seeing Waters' solo version of The Wall concert/production.)
Eric Clapton - Unplugged (DVD and CD)
Nirvana Unplugged (DVD and CD)
The Eagles - Hell Freezes Over (Just have the CD)

Yeah, yeah, they all could be considered a bit obligatory/cliche. . . but I love 'em!  I do usually enjoy studio albums more, but these live muthas are great!

Hey!

Portishead "Live: Roseland NYC"  Great performance by the leading singer Beth Gibbons. The recording is great also with eerily feel of the space. Probably the best live performance of this type of music.

The incredible rawness of Kurt Cobain made this live acoustic version great.

BTW... I have both above albums on vinyl LPs.

Take care,
Buddy :thumb:
