>>Sound quality have anything to do with it?   Some my my favorites aren't exactly 'audiophile quality.'<<

It not so much about sound quality but that is a factor. It's more about the performance. The musicians were in top form, great song selection, had the right tempo and artistic expression.

Like some dvd's sound like crap without hdmi connection. Blondie Live in NY 1999 doesn't sound as good as NY 2004 but the band was in the zone in '99. All the songs fit and I could listened to the whole album without being bored. Whereas 2004 goes in the tank by the end of the concert.

For those that haven't seen it yet, the Palladia HD channel is playing Live in Gdansk.  Of course, the schedule may vary across the States.

I second Dave Brubeck Quartet at Carnegie Hall and Little Feat's Waiting for Columbus. Both classics. Compare the "you-are-there" clarity of the Brubeck set with the Stevie Ray Vaughan live album recorded at Carnegie 20+ years later, which sounds like it was recorded from the lobby. Great music, horrible sound.

Surprised this didn't already make it in:
ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND LIVE AT FILLMORE EAST (Used to have a Nautilus half-speed-mastered release of this)

Here are three I've listened to in the pat couple of days - all worthy of mention:

Wynton Marsalis - Live at Blues Alley
Wynton in a quartet setting.  This is early Wynton, before he tried to reincarnate himself as Duke Ellington.  He really swings, and his pianist Marcus Roberts swings even harder.

James Carter - Live at Baker's Keyboard Lounge
James Carter always sounds as though he's having so much fun.  Seriously, has anybody ever made a baritone saxophone sound as fun as this guy?  I really like the way this record takes some pretty straight-ahead stuff and some more avant garde efforts and unifies them with a fun, funky feel.  It almost makes me want to dance.

Sting-Bring on the Night
I don't enjoy this one as much as I used to, but it's worth mentioning for two reasons:  first, the band - Darrel Jones, Omar Hakim, Branford Marsalis, Kenny Kirkland - is just really great; and second, Kenny Kirkland's solo on the very first track is out-of-this-world.

For sound quality and musical content I believe that Grateful Dead Reckoning is the best commercially available live album.  When I sold stereo 150 years ago I always used it to demo live recordings.
