Well, my situation was similar to NathanM , I realized that when I was on my long distance bicycle trips, I really needed a cell phone for emergencies. So, it was the Tracfone. Another alternative is the T-Mobile pay as you go program, which seems to offer cheaper minutes if you buy the minutes with Bing(a Microsoft cash-back program).
NathanM, I am also curious, how you got the price down, as I have had to do the $100 year extension the last two years. I had been able to buy the year card from ebay sellers, but have found those to dry up
recently.

You could buy a prepaid sim card in Italy, and pay a lot less for the local calls. I think I may have a link for you about international calls as well. Here:
