I had high hopes for this thread, as a thread I could mine for new music. Unfortunately, my early years burnt me out on Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, and any heavy metal. I have none of these artists in my collection and cannot stand listening to them. (OK, I have one token Ozzy.)

Personally, I'd have to bring some Johnny Cash (not sure which one; perhaps a mix) and some Big Head Todd and the Monsters (maybe Flander's Fields). After that, I'd have to think a bit.

I have to agree with simoon,10 only is impossible.I can think of about 100 that deserve to go.
A top ten by genre is much more interesting and useful.If this is a prog island these would do well,in no particular order:

Hahaha...taking the hard drive is no fair.....we only have a hand cranked CD player on this island...no DAC, thats the next issue

I guess being stuck on an island with a mediocre system and 10 CD's doesn't really sound like a place I'd want to be stuck. That sounds more like hell to me.

I'm on a desert island (isolated duty in Iraq). I have 55.3 days (133.20 GB) of music on a portable HD; plugged into my HP laptop; connected to a Music Streamer DAC; connected to a Virtue One.2(I love this amp); and connected to Polk Monitor 30's (throwaways). The speaker wires are "exotic" 12ga stranded copper I salvaged from a lamp post. Power conditioning UK made step down transformer. No need too narrow down to 10 albums. Listening to alot of Latin, Jazz, and World - need too wind down during "down time". I PT to the Foo Fighters, Motorhead, Weazer, and such. Sounds pretty good in my CLU (Containerized Living Unit = 8' x 8' x 20'). I'm enjoying the post a lot of great suggestions.

Maybe a week or two. Then I would have to see the Chaplain because I might have to hurt someone and I can't warm up to "Haji" music.

It seems to me that regular pop music would get stale fast whereas longer, deeper and more complex music might better bear up to repeated listening. Classical music comes to mind or perhaps some of the more complex, layered jazz. Something to keep the mind stimulated and challenged so you wouldn't go CRAZY

Power pop and alt rock is for work out music. You're right if isolated, more complex music keeps the spirits up. That's probably why I am really enjoying Bossa Nova. It's layered in tones, relaxing, and I think beautiful music. I have a lot of Classical (the 3 B's etc) music with me as well. I have been digging choral music by "Stile Antico" it's very relaxing. Not much time for critical listening unfortunately - I have to multitask when I listen. Having an outlet certainly helps to pass the time on the desert island.

In Iraq, is the internet always available via some sort of satellite connection? IOW when you're out on patrol or occupying a small isolated base, can you still be online?

You are correct. We have secure wifi connected with service uplinked via satellite to either kuwait or Europe, not sure. We also get Armed Forces Network (televison) via sat - although that is down right now. This is a tricked out desert island. Most FOB's have MWR internet and AFN.
