clock upgrade????
« on: 3 Apr 2010, 06:19 pm »
hello all

i am new to this forum but find myself very interested in using the macintosh as my platform for hi-end audio.  like most i come from the land of cd player / trasnport.  unlike most i have had fantastic luck with modifying both my transport and dac. (47labs flatfish and ack aDack)  one of the mods performed was a clock upgrade.  i have found this to be a very significant upgrade.  is there a corresponding upgrade in the land of computer audio?  is a clock upgrade not necessary? is there a way to do digital out to I2S interface?

i will stop here as the questions can go on and on.

thanks
xero

Short answer is no, but typically you either use the optical output (piggy backed with headphone port) or you would use a USB/FireWire DAC.  Either way you can get a dac that would reclock the stream.

thanks for the quick reply.  in my current set up (transport, dac) it is the transport that is doing the reclocking.  my dac is not set up that way.  is it possible to set it up that way?

Bryston's bda1 dac reclocks.  I'm sure there are others and Bryston will be releasing a music server that will act like a transport and if I understand it correctly will access the files over a network and correctly clock the spdif before sending it to your dac.

again thanks for the reply.

i have defined t he sound that i like and i have come to
like the non - oversampling topology. and currently not
interested in moving to another topology?  so i would
be very interested in hearing if adding a clock here would
be possible.  also i have understood that using the I2S buss
works well with keeping timing as uncontaminated as possible.
that being said is there a usb to I2S cable?

again thanks,
xero

Might check these guys out...

Pop Pulse PC Link  http://www.cryo-parts.com/pclink.html

Seems like it was discussed on this thread:
  http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=56773.0

And another:
http://www.wavelengthaudio.com/usbdac.html

You might pop over to the bryston circle and ask about how the USB port gets routed to the DAC of the BDA1 assuming you just want to reduce jitter and not partial to your current DAC.
