Jolida Tube Cd Player repairable??
« on: 30 Mar 2010, 12:27 am »
The story is way too long, too strange and too unbelievable so I will cut to the chase.

In the above picture, two of the yellow caps? have come loose/unsoldered.  I have no skills at all in the area of putting them back right.  Is it worth paying someone to do this or shall i sell the unit for parts?  Lots of upgrades were done and I can show more pics or you can go to my gallery and scope them out.

thanks!

Try to find a local tech to resolder them. You'll take a big beating $ wise to sell it for parts. Unfortunately someone botched something @ some point in the manufacture or the mods.

It looks like some serious upgrades have been performed to this player. It would take a qualified tech (or even a decent DIY'er) about 10 minutes to remove the analog board and resolder the caps so it shouldn't cost too much. The JD100 is a very good machine and well worth a few extra bucks to get it working properly

Yeah, it wasn't a botched job but rather it would seem it happened in shipping.  even though there aren't any marks on the top or bottom of the chassis...very very strange>>>>

Typical uninformed audiophile hack job. The correct solution for you would be to remove those poor sounding AudioCaps and put back the smaller original box type capacitors, Vishays, Wimas, etc.

I can fix this for you for $50, plus shipping, and plus any parts that I have to order to do a proper job.

It seems like that's a lot of heat right next to some huge (physically, anyway) caps.  That doesn't invoke confidence.

If you have any skills, it wouldn't take long to resolder those connections.

If it's only a solder job - easy to do. It'd be a shame to waste it for bad solder joints. If the connections were made properly in the first place, I can't see how they could have let go during shipping. All other connections should also be checked. Oh, and don't go back to the original polyester box caps - they are horrible. I put Sonicaps in mine when I had it.

Care to elaborate how it got back into your hands?

You asked for it, you got it!  :)

1.  Sold it to a guy in New York
2.  He did not want insurance but I got some anyway along with delivery confirmation.
3.  What he got was a small box with two labels that read "Seattle Bulk Mail Facility".  box contained a book, pair of socks and fingernail polish!!
4.  Asked for a refund, but he apparently did not know that when you pay with paypal for something non-ebay there is no guarantee.
5.  I filed through the USPS and he did get most of his money back.
6.  The delivery confirmation never showed it being delivered.
7.  Without me buying and paying for the insurance on my own he never would have gotten a refund.
8.  This all ocurred around november.
9.  About a month ago I got an email from the person i had bought the unit from saying the Jolida was at his place.  He had gotten a notice from the USPS saying they had an undeliverable pkg and come and get it.
10. The labels were gone from the outside of the box so they had to open it up and look at the front of the 2nd box which had his original return address.
11. The boxes showed no damage from dropping but yet those caps had come off.
12. Lots of questions:

where has the box been all this time?
where did the seattle labels come from?
why did he not want insurance?
how the heck did the damage occur?

So now I am stock with a Jolida that needs repair, deciding what I should do :)

That sounds logical to me. Have you looked for other damaged parts? Does it turn on and spin CD's?

The PC board: If traces lifted during the cap's uprooting, they can be repaired as well.

Was the guy who bought it named "John Titor"?
I wouldn't turn that CDP on. I suspect it's come back from the future!

You could have a lot worse things returned to you than  a JD100.

Bill, didn't Response Audio used to do JD100 work/mods, or is that me getting old and misremembering something?

Any interest in the unit as is?  I could see if it does turn on and read cd's ok...willing to let go pretty cheap :)
