Do you turn your amplifier(s) off, leave it/them on always or go for option number 3?

I only turn it on when I am about to listen to music, then turn it off again after I am done.
I turn it on when I start listening to music, and turn it off when I go to bed.
I turn it on in the morning, and turn it off when I go to bed.
I only turn it off when I am away for a longer period of time (a week or more).
Does it have an "off" switch?

Turn it off or leave it on?

Just curious, how often do you touch the power switch?

Always on 24/7,unless I go away for a few weeks and then they would be on standby.

No need for 24/7. Besides magnetism builds up . A deguass disc is reccomended before playing if you desire 24/7 . An hour before listening time is more than enough after initial break-in. Save power and money.

Digital IMO is another issue 24/7 is reccomended.

A 4BSST consumes 170 Watts at idle and a 7BSST consumes 215 Watts at idle.  Every hour.
I just couldn't throw that kind of electricity away.  If you have one pair of 7B's, that would be like leaving 6 - 75 Watt incandescent bulbs or 24 - 75W-equivalent compact flourescent bulbs on 24/7.

If it was a modern source component that consumed a watt or two on idle, I might leave that on.

Magnetism builds up? What do you base this belief on?

What's a "degauss disc?"

I used to leave everything on 24/7. My power bill was averaging about $400 per month. I wasn't sure however how much power my renter was using since before he moved in I was averaging $130 per month, that was before adding amps. After he moved out my bill averaged $200 per month. So having 4 amps powered up all the time costs too much money.

Now I power up about 1/2 hour before playing tunes and shut 'er down at bedtime. 8)

It's like leaving the shower on 24/7 so you can be sure its ready for you when you want to take a shower.  I side with those who power up 1 hour or less before listening and even then I'll throw something on just for background music while warming up so I don't feel like I'm wasting energy.  If you save $150.00 per month just think, in a year you can buy a brand new BDA-1 or a Torus CS15. :thumb:

For our family's 9BSST and 7BSST2, we fire up 10 minutes before and start rolling LPs or CDs after 10 minutes.

Yes missing the first 10 mins of most cd's - I can see the point of that...... :icon_lol:

I agree that I just can't throw away that level of energy.

I have 6x7B, 3x4B, 1x3B, and a couple of extra 7B........

Out of choice I would leave kit on 24/7.

One of the reasons is the stress placed on equipment at power on greatly reduces the life of kit, so always on is best, and a more consistant sound.

but I want some more 7B's...........so saving £'s

Be well...

Likewise neither do I. I might feel differently if I had high cap amps like say Odyssey Stratos but being mine are tube hybrid amps, I see no good reason for burning electicity needlessly.  :D

Hi colhogan,

Regarding Capacitors used By Bryston in Our products.

Nothing Bryston uses has a 'short' lifespan.  All electrolytic capacitors have a finite lifespan/shelf-life defined by their construction techniques, (quality of electrolyte, method of sealing, types of internal connections, methods of drawing off internal heat, etc.), and by the temperature they are subjected to.  Bryston, because of our 20-year warranty, uses only the best and longest-life construction available.

Bryston's special electrolytic caps typically have a lifespan specified at 3000 hours minimum at 105 degrees C, at full specified Voltage and current.   Electrolytic caps' lifetimes double with each reduction of 10 degrees C below their maximum operating temperature.  Thus, when a cap is specified at 105 degrees C, and it operates at a typical temperature of 45 degrees C, (105 - 45 = 60), the lifetime is increased by 2 to the 6th power, or 64 times.  Thus, the minimum expected lifetime under normal operating temperature, powered-up, calculates to 3000 X 64 = 192,000 hours, or 22 years, assuming the caps were run at full Voltage and temperature all the time.

Bryston always leaves a substantial margin on both Voltage and current in our power-supply components to further increase expected lifetime.  As a result, the life of the electrolytic capacitors in Bryston products can be expected to equate to shelf-life, (25+ years), under conditions of either full-time power-up or intermittent operation.  It makes essentially no difference if they are power-up only for listening, or run 24 hours a day for many years.

Another advantage of using only the very best component quality for long lifetime is that these components also operate more efficiently, with lower internal resistance, faster current-delivery, less distortion, and ultimately, much better sound quality.

I hope this is helpful.

I'm on time-of-day power rates. During the winter months my electricity is 1.5 times the normal rate during the daytime. I keep my gear off. It only seems to take about 15-20 minutes for my gear to warm up.

Relax,everyone...
I was just saying that I had heard that Filter Caps may eventaully grow old and weaken over time,so I preferred NOT to leave my electronics on when not in use..

I know, I know, it sounds silly  :D but old tube habit dies hard.
Actually, we flip them on, get our chairs, cups, munchies, fight for seats and best positions and all that hustling often takes about 10 minutes .
