Do you turn your amplifier(s) off, leave it/them on always or go for option number 3?

I only turn it on when I am about to listen to music, then turn it off again after I am done.
I turn it on when I start listening to music, and turn it off when I go to bed.
I turn it on in the morning, and turn it off when I go to bed.
I only turn it off when I am away for a longer period of time (a week or more).
Does it have an "off" switch?

A couple of years ago I began watching opera DVDs while running the audio through my two channel system. I found that the audio dynamic range in opera is quite a bit greater than the typical (classical) CD. With opera, in order to get the softest parts right, I have to turn the volume control to about 11:30, whereas it is usually at 9:30 - 10:00 for CDs.

I quickly learned that if I turned the system on just before starting the DVD the audio was a clearly harsh at 11:30, so I would turn it down to 9:30, where it was more listenable, and then kick it up a notch three or four times over 15 minutes, by which time it was sounding good at 11:30, where I kept it.

The experience made it clear that it takes only about 15 minutes to completely stabilize my system, so I always turn it on at least 15 minutes before I want to listen, but never more than a half hour. I always turn it off when not in use.

A side point: I've found that one of the best ways for me to test a new audio component is with a good opera DVD, where you always get very wide dynamic range as well as a variety of voice and instrumental effects.

Save the Planet :)

Turn em on, get it playing softly, leave 'em and take a shower, spend some QT with the wife and kids. If you don't skip the shampoo and the soap, all should be nice and toasty by the time you get back. Music time!  :thumb:

Although I'm sure there are sonic benefits to using batteries and getting "off the grid", I just can't bring myself to contribute additional toxic lead and other hazardous substances going into the environment for non-portable devices that have proximity to AC.

I do use batteries, but try to relegate them to portable devices - flashlights, remote controls, etc.

BTW, while we're saving the planet, I know many people just throw lead acid batteries and the now-popular compact flourescent bulbs (containing mercury) into the trash to go to the landfills, but most cities do have some type of hazardous waste disposal in proximity to your part of town, usually once a month or so.  Just call your local trash pickup entity for imformation.  Also, battery stores like Batteries Plus will accept all hazardous battery waste.

You're absolutely right, Steve.  I'm all for protecting our environment to the best of our ability but a little downstream thinking by the "green-heads" would be in order.  What's going to happen to all those industrial strength batteries in the millions of Priuses running around.  They are big and contain a myriad of caustic chemicals.  In a few years it will become the "crisis of the moment" requiring economy killing tax increases to mitigate.  Same with the murcury in the CFB's.  And, we sure didn't think enough about nuclear waste disposal 40 years ago when we began building nuclear power plants.  So, when you decide to leave your mini power plants on ad infinitum......

I was thinking AC not DC Steve. Y'know saving a few KW hours worth of Coal or Uranium by not going 24/7? I perfectly agree about everything you guys said about disposal though.

Knowing that my VAC tube amp is sucking down 350 watts at idle is a significant factor in why I picked up a Class D amp recently. Sure the gear needs to sound good. I'm just saying that in my pros and cons list, this was a factor.

Hi Mike - some of the Class D amps I have looked at seem to draw the same power as a compatible Class AB amp at 'idle' (depending on power supply type) but the Class D wins hands down at full power? Have you experienced that at all?

Hi James,

From the Digital Amp Co website:

"This amplifier is also a "green" product since it consumes less than 30W when "quiet" and less than 5W in standby mode."

It uses a big transformer - I'd think the switching power supplies like the stock ICE modules would consume little juice at idle, but really have no idea.

I haven't engaged standby (but want to look into what I need for the 12V trigger).

I'll sometimes leave music on all day and for this app the tubes (at least the PA100/100) really suck the juice.

I don't plan on running this Class D at full power (>> 600 watts at 4 ohm) anytime soon! But it certainly does crank without strain.

Its absolutely absurd that my local trash pick-up doesn't have any special way to get rid of batteries and bulbs.  We get a pamphlet every December of the pick-up and recycling calendar, and in the literature it says to throw that stuff out in the regular garbage.  You can't even drop them off.  I could understand if I lived in an impoverished neighborhood.  Considering my county has the highest taxes and tax rate in the country, I'm dumbfounded.

Ok, James, so there's no adavntage to leaving the amps on all the time? How about the preamps?

The only time that I can remember leaving electronic equipment “on” was test equipment. The calibration was extremely important on certain test equipment as we utilized temperature controlled compartments to ensure frequency stabilization - of course, this was many years ago.

Be well...

A few kw hours times millions of people = millions and millions of kwh's.

it looks like james turns them off as well.
i used to leave them on 24/7, but my 4b sst2 sucks in 170 watts every hour, which is about 5 times as much as my previous amp when idle. so now i turn it off when i go to bed, and turn it on when i want to listen to music (which usually is the radio in the morning), then leave it on for the day.

Turn if off via front panel or rear panel?

It is probably easier to turn off and on via the remote 12v if you are running Bryston preamp.

I listen to my system everyday so I leave the amps on all the time 24/7.

i can't get to the rear panel (hidden inside my cabinet), so just the button on the front.
