The Salk Sound group listen experiment.
« on: 20 Feb 2010, 11:44 pm »
Crazy, silly idea...

Would any Salk owners consider participating in a sort of virtual group listen? Simply, I'd like to recommend a high quality recording that would be available to all free of charge, have some Salk owners listen to said recording, and then discuss it in this thread.

The recording is Nine Inch Nails' The Slip. Trent Reznor was kind enough to release this recording to the public for free. Interestingly, it's available as 16/44.1 FLAC and .WAV, in addition to 24/96 FLAC and WAV files. Anybody with a CD burner can download the .WAV files and have a CD-R ready in a few minutes; the music server crowd are well served with the ready made FLAC files.

EDIT: M4A lossless --fo' you Itunes folks-- , as well as MP3's are available from the link below.

Link: http://dl.nin.com/theslip/signup

The inspiration for this "experiment" was the fact that there are more than several instances where I am hearing incredible (in the truest definition of the word) things at times.

For example: the song 1,000,000, track number 2. At approximately 3 minutes into the track Mr. Reznor is repeating the phrase "I don't feel...", and then at 3:34 he can be heard singing the verse "A million miles away..." I hear this verse coming directly in line with my right ear, as if Mr. Reznor is sitting in the right rear corner of my room (my listening seat is up against the back wall; speakers setup ala the Audio Physic method) with his voice sounding so eerily real and creepy.

On other tracks, e.g., the track The Four of Us are Dying, I keep my head pointed straight ahead and turn my eyeballs perpendicularly to the left or right and hear the most incredible and lifelike effects.

Also, this particualr recording offers a whole lot more than the aforementioned: deep bass, smooth extended highs, a sound stage that extends from wall to wall and deep behind the speakers. At least this what I hear with my HT-2 TL's.

If anybody else would like to participate I would really appreciate your comments.

Jim, Dennis, if you read this I would also appreciate your comments on this particular recording, especially if you happen to listen to it with your HT-4 prototypes.

Edit: System: Lots of RealTraps; Pass Aleph 5 amp; Placette RVC passive; Wavelength Audio Brick Asynchronous USB DAC; custom single board computer Linux USB music server; Salk Sound HT2-TL.

Sounds like a great idea.  I just received my download e-mail.  Now I just have to decide what format to download.  I'll use it to test out the 3rd freaking version of the HT4, the crossover for which I'm cobbling together tonight.

I'm new to this torrent stuff.  I downloaded a program called Bit Torrent and installed it.  I then clicked on Nine_Inch_Nails_-_The_Slip_-_Flac.torrent and it said it was downloading.  I don't know where, though.  I guess I'll search for it tomorrow.

Actually, torrent is required for all of the high resolution stuff.   You're not doing the mpeg thing, are you?

My apologies to all. I had originally downloaded this album when it was first release a while back; bittorrent at that time was not a requirement.

Windows and Mac users can download this small bitorrent client: http://www.utorrent.com/

Thanks for the link.

I needed to use a torrent application to complete the download.  I use Transmission on Mac OSX.

In my system, A million miles away, on 1,000,000, was approximately 2 points forward of the starboard beam, or ENE, if my face were pointed north (between 2 O'Clock and 3 O'Clock, but closer to 3 O'Clock).

I could only listen to that track, however, before I thought my head would explode.  I need to re-orient myself with some Mia Doi Todd.

Can you elaborate a bit? If you heard that verse at "closer to 3 O'clock", then did you enjoy it? Did it surprise you? From a purely technical/audiophile perspective, did it do any special for anything you?

Be frank and forthright, as I would not be offended if you thought that this particular effect or the recording were sub par. I do understand that this particualr material is not everyone's cup of tea, but it's the only source material I know of that is: free, a recent recording, and available in a high resolution formats.

If anyone else knows of any other good source material that is available in a free and exchangeable format then I'm all ears.

OgOgilby and I were listening to a different track on his system a couple of weeks ago, and the sounds seem to come directly from the side, and some sounds even seemed to come slightly from behind.  I can't remember the track, but maybe OgOg will chime in.

Regardless, I heard the same effect that you described.  I didn't care for the music, but that is immaterial and not critical of anyone else's musical tastes.  I am recuperating with Tracy Thorn.   :D

Listen to any recording mastered with QSound.  These phase effects are quite obvious on virtually any playback system, including ones that have Salk speakers.

I'm quite aware of phase effects, and have listened to this particular track with my previous loudspeakers --a pair of B&W 804's (circa 1997). With the B&W's (doing their wonderful disappearing act), Reznor's voice was just slightly to the right of the speaker boundary.

With the Salks,  it seems as if the speakers are performing something particularly impressive: a real sound source emanating from the right rear corner of my room *and* pulling off the incredulous act of convincing a bachelor that some other male has physically materialized and intruded in my personal listening space.

My daughter had that experience on the 1,000,000 track.  I asked her to listen with her eyes closed and point to the voices that you referenced at the 3:00 and 3:34 marks, and she asked me if I was singing along to the music.  I was sitting about 2.5 feet behind and to the left of her, but I wasn't singing.

Help an analog guy out.  I downloaded the utorrent software, then downloaded the torrent itself onto my Windows desktop but now how do I do anything with it?  I tried dragging the icon into Windows Media Player but that didnt work.  Help?

Thanks for the link, it runs well on my AppleTv now. I can hear the same things as you described. Cannot say anything about the bass yet - the wife is at home! Regarding the "smooth extended highs", well I do not know if this kind of music can be described as smooth in any aspect... but I like it.

I'm a huge NIN fan.  If you want to really hear this effect and get really creeped out, locate a copy of "Eraser" on "The Downward Spiral" album.  It's fantastic.  There is a moaning that starts in front of you from several...we'll call them "people".  Then they proceed to surround you and the effect is very close to you and very much from all around your person.  If you listen to it in the dark with your eyes closed, you're a liar if you say you didn't get a chill up your spine.

It's amazing what they can do with phasing technology.  But this track is far more impressive than ones being discussed in this thread.

I'm strictly a Linux guys who uses console programs, but...

Looking at the the uTorrent screenshots I'm going to assume that you need to open that torrent file you downloaded to your desktop.

This is from the uTorrent beginners guide on their webpage:

Once you've obtained a torrent file, you simply need to import it into µTorrent. There are several ways of doing this.

    * Drag and drop the torrent file you downloaded onto µTorrent's window.
    * Choose to open the torrent file instead of saving it to your computer. If you have associated µTorrent with .torrent files, this will work. µTorrent asks on first run if you want to do this, but if you said no, you can go to Options, Preferences and click button labeled Associate with .torrent files to reassociate it
.

Read the guide here:http://www.utorrent.com/documentation/beginners-guide

Let us know how that works out.

I have that album, and I agree. But like I said, it's the only album that I know that's legally available for free to all and comes in .WAV and FLAC in 16/44.1 and 24/96.

If anyone knows of any other good , free, lossless material then I'm all ears.

Edit: spelling
