Large, customised CD rack/cabinet/shelf
« on: 18 Feb 2010, 03:02 pm »
I hope I am posting in the right section.

Does anyone have a large, customised CD rack/cabinet/shelf which can hold several thousand CDs?  If so, would you be so kind as to post pictures of it?  I am going to commission one and I am looking for some ideas.  I did a search on Google images and could not find anything I like which I can use.

All responses will be much appreciated.

I use storage cabs from here for dvd's and cd's.
Their not inexpensive, but they are very heavy and well made.
I call them office furniture for the home.

I built an oak with cherry finish that holds about 1,000 cd's. Will take a couple of pics tonight and send it to you later or tomorrow.

6' tall and 3' wide.  I used 6" red oak and the cherry finish turned out very nice.  Got the idea from a friend that had one built - he paid $250-300 as I remember and I diy'ed it for about $120 a couple of years ago.

Lumber has gone up but got some rough to do another one.  Yes I filled the sucker up and then some.

Hi Jake,

Thanks for taking the trouble to take the pictures.

Good job on your DIY shelf and $120 sounds like a very reasonable sum to pay.  I am sure you also had lots of fun in the building process.  I am not into DIY unfortunately and will have to rely on a custom cabinet maker.

Thanks lonewolfny42 for posting the group buy link.

I am aware of Guizu's products and in fact have a 3-tier hifi rack from the company.  I can testify that the woodwork is absolutely beautiful.  I would have loved to have a custom built CD cabinet from this company but unfortunately it does not do any custom work (the standard CD rack offerings are nice but do not meet my needs).

Looks nice! But all that work and still not enough space  :(  Time to build another!

I built this last winter:

It holds about 1,000 CDs but I designed it sturdy enough so that I could build a matching hutch to go on top of it and hold another 1,500-2,000.  It was a fun project!  No screws or nails and very little glue!

Those spinning ones are nice but I would want one that could hold around 2,000 cd's, haven't found one yet....
