Small Corner Horns
« on: 9 Feb 2010, 01:52 pm »
I am finishing a room that is going to be perfectr for some small corner horns.  I am thinking of trying the Frugal Horn.

Are there any other small corner horn plans availible? Has anyone here built some frugal horns and what drivers did you use?  I want to use a tested plan as I like to build stuff but I am not very tweaky.

Decware has a plan for a corner horn that looks interesting, but I don't know if it fits into the definition of "small"...:)

Are K-horns too large? There are many ways to modify them if they'll fit.
Alternatively, you might benefit by contacting Bill Woods. I'm sure he would advise you as to which designs you may be considering have the most merit. He has always been quite objective with me - and he has a broad, long standing frugal streak.

I saw the decware ones and they look intersting.  Also I would love one day to try a Bill Woods horn but this room is not a good fit.  Actually its no fit at all.  I think I am going to go with a small design using a fostex driver or similar.  I really liked my small BR fostex monitor I built so I am intersted in the BLH designs.

Anyone built a frugal horn?

I've built a pair of BIBs, which are basically corner horns :)

They take up next to no floor space, but are much taller than the original Frugals...

No more than 4 feet tall. How far apart? How far from your listening spot? Realistic bandwidth goal? Budget?

The issue is my house is a SMALL bungalow.  We are finishing the main upstairs room but it has like most bungalows an eved ceiling with 50" knee walls.  We are turing this into a reading room (read second system room for me).  The seating will be down the long way with the speakers in the corners.  The room is not that wide I will measure it today.  Budget?  What's that?  Seriously I am looking to build a small pair of corner horns with Fostex drivers.  Budget is not really a factor.  Of course there will be a sub.
Anywhoo I think I am just going to go with the frugals unless something more interesting comes up.

Unless you are hell bent on building your own, these would be a very worthwhile consideration. Price is probably very negotiable. They may be a little more than 48 inches tall but you wouldn't want them all the way back against the wall anyway. I had a pair of Dialogues for a few years. They will thrill you, even if a trip down to N.J. doesn't.

I'd say build the frugal horns.  Little to no risk in that.  I might also consider something with the newer Jordan replacement (starts with an M).

+1 on the Jordan MLTL. The Jordan drivers have always had a rather nice sound to them, and a TL cabinet for them has seemed to work out better than ported or horn-loaded enclosures based on the ones I've heard.

I understood the question to be about "corner-horns" not MLTL's
Try the Frugels, they're a fun build!

You understood correct. The space is limited and I want the speakers in the coerners. Frugal horns it is!  They do look really fun to build.  I do no think a mltl will do what I need.
Thanks

Josh mentioned the Jordan drivers, and one of the threads he linked to was about the new MLTL designs from Jordan USA...

No reason why you couldn't be the MLTL in the corner.

No reason at all, except the question posed was specifically about corner horns!

For sure. I honestly just want to build a folded horn.  It seems fun and a skill I NEED.  I do not think I will buy speakers for a
long time.  It's way less fun.
