Anyone offering flat packs for the N3 or NX2?
« on: 7 Feb 2010, 04:05 pm »
I'm out on the left coast for the time being and far away from my woodworking tools.  I'm looking for a flat pack with the holes routed and the baffle edges rounded.

:thumb:  - With any luck I can achieve "flush & square" and apply a basic, paintable veneer to the sides & top.
But to tell you the truth, even if I can't find precision manufactured wood parts, I could do it with the my hand tools and be happy with a rattle can finish if the sound is right.

Send the plans to Elemental Designs and they will give you a reasonable quote.  I did it for a pair of statement-minis(floorstanders) and it was $275.

One thing I could also do is check out local cabinet makers.  Takes some leg work but I might find someone who is "interested" in the project as we say.   Well, I decided to go with the NX2.  Sorry to change horses midstream Danny.

I am excited about this project.  The larger woofer kind of sold me on the NX2 along with the ribbon tweet and sealed box.  I am expecting a major improvement over my entry level Epos ELS8's.

Danny,

Even though Motosapien has decided to go with the N2X, I'd still like to hear what you find out about flat packs for the N3 and possibly the OB5. I would also be interested in getting quotes for built & veneered but unfinished cabinets for both the N3 and OB5. Is there a list of trusted sources?

Thanks,
Wayne

The owner of the flat pack can't get it out yet because of the snow... Dang global warming.  :duh:  I'll keep you posted.

Bought two 2' x 4' x 3/4" MDF at Home Depot and stopped by a cabinet maker with the cut sheet.  Half hour later I had precision cut pieces and had made some new friends.  The guy who owned the shop had made speaker cabinets, thousands of them, back in the day which I assume was the seventies/eighties.  They charged me $20.

I was able to build the cabinets minus the front & backs with a couple 24" clamps.  They are damn near perfect as far as flush and square.  I now have to decide if I want to invest in router (any recommendations?) or just have my buddies at the cabinet shop do it.  I also need to install the internal braces but I want to do this as I add the no-res material.

And yes, I should have photographed and posted my kitchen table clamping setup.  It just worked so slick.

You can get a router from Sears and a Jasper Jig from parts express for under $100 last I looked, but it's been a while.

I'd go ahead and install all of the braces then the No Rez. Just leave the front baffle for last.

eD just e-mailed me a few weeks ago stating that they could produce a complete kit with driver cut outs and everything for mid $200. I am still thinking very hard about this!

Thanks for the tip Stephan. I inquired about a Ported N3 build. Since I sit a fair distance away and space is little tight, Danny has recommended these over his other designs. I have never listened to the Neo3 tweet before. I recently purchased a new pair of SLS H.T. 6.5s monitors that use the Neo3 and it sounds fantastic. The low end reaches to 40Hz, as it is a ported design, although not up to the specs of the N2x, as it could benefit from no-rez instead of the standard pollyfill. It could also use some bracing although I'm  not sure if it will effect the crossover design.

Ruben is looking for cabinet building work. He posted some pics in this thread:

He even mentioned that he'd build and ship COD.

You guys might want to see what he will do for you.
