Yes it will.  You will be able to check your email, browse the internet and buy music from the comfort of your listening chair.

As long as you do only one of those at a time.  To me, it seems ridiculously expensive to buy a $400 device to control iTunes, but I know people will do this.

Not so. Email is always active regardless of which app is running. And you can play content from iTunes while surfing. So yes, all three can be done simultaneously.

$500 device.  But with it's functionality and nice large screen, I'm even thinking about it.

Is the above considered multitasking?

Anyone know if I'll be able to run the app Mariusz has mentioned in another thread (basically turning it into an infrared remote to control volume, etc. on audio equip) while at the same time running Amarra/Itunes?

Yes, but it's limited to Apple apps.

If you're talking about running Amarra/iTunes via a VNC app, then the answer is no. You cannot run more than one non-Apple app at a time.

With iPad alone .....I doubt it.
If you choose to use another Mac like Mini for exemple (with your iTunes library & Amarra) - yes.
Then Mini will do all the heavy work and iPad would simply control it via free app from Apple (just like iPod Touch or iPhone).

However, I have a feeling that new more advanced apps will be developed ones the iPad hits the streets.

Last but not least, I would wait for the 2nd gen. of iPad which may address the  issues of productivity and features.

I agree with the recommendation of waiting for the second generation. Apple has a history of making the second generation much more functional than the first, and sometimes even dropping the price a little. Sometimes......

I agree.  That was the case with my iPhone.  Hopefully Apple learned from the iPhone product and built the iPad with the ability to load more robust updates to the unit rather than updating the operating system on a second generation Pad.

Who has the patience for that??? the 60 day wait is tough for me

Besides Apple needs all of us 1st Gen owners (glorified beta testers) so they have all the working capital they need to continue developing the product.

It would be, if you could use to control a headless mini with software like VNC.

Correct me if I'm wrong.  Sure would be cool if it could.

You will be able to control iTunes with the "remote" application in a headless configuration.  I'm not familiar with the OS of the iPad to address the VNC question.

I use Jaadu VNC to control my Mini now via itouch.  The ipad will do the same.

Well... what I meant was to control it like a remote computer not just the limited Itune functions.

My post above with Jaadu VNC can control everything on the computer from startup.  Open programs, close programs....

OK-  that is cool.

So it basically turns the IPad into a full blown Mac?

Any limitations? For ex. can you stream YouTube or watch a movie, etc. ?

I do not see the point in doing so.
You can use Ipad for that.

I am looking for reverse VNC so I could control (mirror) my iPod in the Onkyo transporter. It comes with the remote but Ipad would be so much better.
