Any good bacon recommendations?
« on: 19 Jan 2010, 12:32 am »
I am looking to try some new and exciting selections - any recommendations?

Also, has anybody tried the bacon of the month clubs?

While the bacon looks yummy, it is also quite pricey for a membership ($200-300 for a 6 month membership which only gets you one 16oz package per month).

I fancy Applegate Farms bacon but I am not sure if that's esoteric enough for you.

I have had Nodine's products purchased from the store in Connecticut. Quite yummy as well.

If you want to drive to VA try Polyface

Applegate (and others) make Turkey bacon.

We buy the uncured stuff...it's quite tasty (and possibly better for you)

It smells a lot like pork bacon...much of the allure is still there, George :thumb:

looking carefully at what they have in the think sliced salt cured bacon. Now in my freezer is some Wright bacon from SAMS club http://www.wrightbrand.com

I have had good luck and great bacon from SAMS club. Or try Costcos.

Nueske's is a big favorite of mine and now you can even order it from Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Nueske-Sliced-Applewood-Smoked-Regular/dp/B0000DG72R

This one is a little less smokey and extremely tasty... Hobb's bacon. I always bought it from Hobbs, so I'm not sure where to direct you, but some times the hunt makes it even better.

Another is Niman Ranch bacon. I used to buy directly from Bill way back in the day when they were Niman-Schell Ranch. They do great things with pigs and cows and you can buy their products in many stores now. I even saw their stuff in Costco recently.

As an Ann Arbor resident, I am compelled to refer you to Zingerman's Deli:

Here's their "When Pigs Fly:  Bacon of the month club": http://www.zingermans.com/Product.aspx?ProductID=G-BAC-3

and their "Guide to Better Bacon": http://www.zingermans.com/Product.aspx?ProductID=P-ARI-10

When in NH, go to the following in Manchester - Bartlett Street Superette,  316 Bartlett St, Manchester, NH  03102  / (603) 627-1580. Fantastic Polish store, including home made smoked kielbasa, bacon, etc. Excellent quality; you get what you pay for, which one cannot say about North End Boston.

I can see that this won't be a popular observation but the best bacon recommendation is to avoid the stuff.

You can pretty much eat anything by applying moderation and commonsense, so I am not too concerned.

Let's keep the thread on target please.

Thanks,

I'm thinking of ordering the slab bacon from here, especially since they're having free shipping.  (This is nitrite and nitrate free bacon, by the way.)

I like the Applegate bacon, but I'm looking for more variety.
