Which amp series, where and why?

I am curious what others think. I have my own views/reasons but would like to hear from others.

If you had a 3 way speakers system for example PMC BB5 but thats not important.

And you were running tri amp or 3 way active

And you have three 7B amps ST, SST and SST2 series

Which would you use on Bass / Mid / HF and why?

You ONLY have one of each type of amp and must use all three.........what do you do?

I would try to determine if any of these amps are biased in Bass Mid or HF.

Then I would hook them up in the order that they we biased.

Bass to Bass, MID to MID, HF to HF.

Oddly i might put the sst/2 on the bottom and use the sst in mids and st on highs. Only because it hink the sst/st are more similiar in sound. But i would really want the put the sst/2 on the mids and sst on the highs. I have a feeling that the sst/2 on the low would work the best though.

I found this article in the forum

    James,

New to the forum and new to Bryston hopfully very soon...

I ordered a 4BSST 1 week before x-mas ('08) and still waiting for the amp to be delivered - I am making the assumption that when it arrives it will be of the 4B SST2 version...

I have two quick questions on the assumptions that it will be a 4BSST2...

    1) How different will be the front panel switch? Will it be a membrane type or will it be a more traditional 'push on/off' type?

    2) If I was to bi-amp in the future using a second 4BSST (non squared) - each amp driving driving the LF and HF sections of the speaker - will there be sufficient difference in the sound between a 4BSST and 4BSST2 as to make this configuration unworkable? (I suppose there is the option to have one of the amps drive both HF sections of the speaker and the other amp drive the LF sections - which will at the least balance any sound difference that may exist)

Hi There,

Welcome sir.

What dealer did you order from and I will check for you.

1.Yes all the new switches are the push-pull type.

2.The SST2 (squared) should go on the mids and top. Your OK with the SST on the Bass.

Your option one is based on SST/ST being 'more similar'. My person opinion is that the SST/ST are not similar, the SST shows much more detail.

So I think your second option is best and what I would CURRENTLY do....

ST - Bass
SST2 Mids
SST HF

As it happens I also agreee that the SST2 is best suited to bass of the three options due to the power supply in it (from spec). BUT that would leave the ST series for mid/hf and I think I will hear less detail. From my own experience I found much more detail from the SST than the ST.

Thank you, In the 'bi amp' case the SST2 is suggested to do mid&hf so in my tri amp options mid OR hf - I think mids.

The SST is suggested then for bass in a bi amp system. so yes suitable for bass in tri amp but the option is then bass or HF for the ST and SST.....

Mmmmm - choices

How about the SST2 on the HF?

Ditch the St and just use the SSt on lows and SSt2 on mids and highs.

You could always try every configuration and see (hear) what works best to your own ears  :D

From what I've personally heard and what I've been told, the best way is usually the best sounding amp at the highs/mids, and the next best at bass.  Highs and mids are far harder to get right than bass, IMO.  There's far more detail and the like in those regions.  Not that bass is easy or the same for every amp.

In a 3 way/tri-amp system, I'd try the best amp at the mids, 2nd best at the highs, and last amp at the bass.   So...

SST at highs, SST2 at mids, ST at bass.  I'd also try the SST2 at highs and SST at mids.  Maybe the highs are harder to get right than mids?
