TripleFi 10's
« on: 31 Dec 2009, 09:08 pm »
Hi

I just bought a pair of these
http://www.ultimateears.com/_ultimateears/store/products/triplefi10pro.php

Amazon and Logitech had a blow out sale, $100 a pair.  I missed that sale, but got a pair from ebay, free shipping, bing cashback, so final price was $140, not too bad.

I got them a couple of days ago, still letting them break in, but I like them so far.  Just using my old Rio Karma as a source.

Now I'm thinking about converting them to custom.  There's a place in Florida that will do it for $80 plus shipping.  I found a local audiologist that will make the impressions for $20.  The only bad thing is because of the $100 sale, I think this place has a ton of new business right now, and thier lead time is getting longer.

 I snagged 2 pair and if i was thinking i would have snagged 3 very nice iem's I don't think they are quite as good as the westone 3's but that may just be personal preference. Was quite a deal though caused quite a stir over at Head-fi.

Happy listening

Randy, where are you looking to get them converted to custom?  Do you have a link?

Nice score!

Thanks,
Jim

I know it is slightly off topic, but Amazon has a pretty good deal going on the Shure SE530's:

http://www.amazon.com/Shure-SE530PTH-Isolating-Earphones-Control/dp/B000P6M6HY/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1262300415&sr=8-2

I own these and think they are quite good and a steal at Amazon's asking price of $298.

I haven't heard the TripleFi 10's, but I have heard good things about them.

Congrats on the purchase.

There's a very long thread at head fi about the customs
http://www.head-fi.org/forums/f103/iems-reshelled-into-custom-molds-80-usa-triplefi-10-se530-etc-fisher-hearing-454174/

I read it all, had some spare time over the last few days while I watched a test going at work.  The most interesting post is the first one, and the contact information is there.

The place's service appears to be very good.  A few people complained about fit or cosmetic problems, and I think the place took care of them, they remade a few customs that had fit problems.

Figure my total will be $140 (TF3) + $80 (custom) +$20 (mold) + $20 (shipping) = $260
Good deal to get a set of customs with TF3 drivers.

Quite a few people customized the 530's before the TF3 sale, and appear to be happy with the results.

Hi

I just bought a pair of these
http://www.ultimateears.com/_ultimateears/store/products/triplefi10pro.php

Amazon and Logitech had a blow out sale, $100 a pair.

I picked up a pair through Amazon during their sale.  Just received them a few days ago and sent them back for a refund the same day.  IMHO they sound rather poor.  My point of reference is the Shure E2C, AKG K271 MkII and Stax SRX-MkIII.  I found the $70 Shure's to sound far more neutral while also providing vastly superior isolation.

I own a set of the shures and there not even in the same league for sound quality with the triple -fis as far as isolation i had to play around with a couple if tips but once i got the right ones all joy For the last couple of years i have been using Ultimate Ears SuperFi 3  and a pair of Altec Lansing inMotion iM716 Headphones great isolation with the AL's as far as full size cans i like beyerdynamic DT 880 dt 990 an dt 770s and i also ahe a pair of akg 501 at the house here. Thats why there is more then one speaker company

Guys,

Sorry about bringing the Shure SE530's into the discussion - I didn't mean to hijack the thread and turn things into a comparison.  I was just trying to point out a good deal.

I agree.  The Triple-Fi sounded very hifi and phasey, whereas the Shure sounds very coherent from top-to-bottom (likely due to the use of single, full-range drivers).  I also found the Triple-Fi to be overly sensitive to how well they (did not) fit into my ear canal.  They were just not my cup of tea, and I expected much better sound given all of the hyped-up reviews I've read about them.  Obviously, YMMY.

Hey George not a problem need the traffic here here in the headphone circle anyway. and the Shure se530 are in the same league as the triple-fi''s it would come down to taste and isolation  as which one you like the best.

As i stated ive been using UE iems foer a couple of years and like them a lot. Till i heard the Westone 3's at RMAF and they were just great. Pesomally i want a pair of JH13's as they are the best ive ever heard very nice custome molded iems'

I had read the same thread about getting the triple-fis molded bit i think i'll just hold off till i can afford the jh13's

No problem.  I'm looking for a audiologist now to get my impressions made.  I'm going on vacation as of Sunday, so the impressions need to wait until I get back.

George
Don't worry about hijacking the thread.  Doesn't bother me at all.

Lowtech,
If you sent them back the same day, you didn't even give them a chance to break in.  I actually liked them right out of the box, but like them more now, they have maybe 10 hours on them, and the low end is improving.  You could have sold them here, or at head fi, and made somebody happy.

I have been listening to them for the last couple days, and am happy with them.  I'm sure there are better, but I still think these are hard to beat for the price they were at.

I don't know what lowtech was hearing with his...

It's probably just my ears, my source equipment, my music preference and/or the lack of "break-in".     OTOH, it does look like there are at least three others' who purchased them at the $100 sale price and have since posted non-favorable reviews on Amazon (I haven't posted my review yet).

I know some people don't believe in break in, but I do, I think I have heard it, especially in things like headphones or speakers.  And, every one has different preferences, different things they listen for and like.

As for Amazon reviews, I use them for some things, but stereo gear is not one of them.

I suppose being closed-minded has its benefits.  Personally, I find that gathering insights from various sources can be helpful if one doesn't have first-hand experience with a given product.  I simply mentioned Amazon because several folks here, including myself, recently bought the UE phones there on sale.

Randy, thanks for the tip on the customs. I picked up a pair on the Amazon deal, and so far have been pleased. I bet with custom tips they would kick up another notch. Pretty unbeatable phones at the sale price.

I have been using the comply foam tips, I have not found the other tips to be comfortable with this headphone.  I figure with the customs, it will be easier to put them in, and not have to worry about getting a good seal.  I want to get my set color coded, so right and left are obvious.

I'm with you, I'm still slowly working through the tips to find the right one. The custom route is probably the way to go. But since I won't use these much I don't know if I want to spend the dough. We will see.
