VanAlstine Longhorn Cartridge
« on: 10 Dec 2009, 08:15 am »
Hi Audio Nuts,I made 2 Grado Longhorn cartridges that Frank VanAlstine told how to build in the early 80's in his Audio Basics newsletter, boy, that was fun! This is really sick,I still have in my studio apt.,the 2 lubricants used in the AR turntable mod, where I modified to Franks instruction 2 turntables,my own, which lies dormant, and 1 a long time ago for a freind.I have the Longhorn,somewhere...that is something anyone who put the effort into would (never) throw away.I live in Portland Maine, and there is a hobby shop that deals with motorized models, planes, ect.,monster models, those are my faves, but I swear there was a still good supply of the brass channel metal needed. There was also a gray plastic identical item, used I quess in model railroad dioramas.I will go there tomorrow and investigate. If you read this Frank,I remember the channel brass with clay on the ends acted like a tightrope walkers pole giving balance,in my instance,on the AR table I should get up and running. But are not church bells,or (the Liberty Bell) made of a metal that produces ringing ?Just a thought,it's late tonight but I had to pick your mind...your my audio guru....Dawkus

Hiya' Dawkus

We got Frank van Alstine to spill a bit more a couple years back on the Longhorn 'recipe' (while he was on painkillers - hehe )

It's a fine tweek for the Grado....I've tried on 2-3 other cartridges with no betterment I could discern, tho.

Enjoy, John

Hi John, thanks for that story about the Longhorn and those different cartridges.I did go to the hobby shop today and they have the proper u shaped brass, different gray plastic u channel too.If you want me to pick you up some let me know.It comes in about 2 foot lengths and is'nt that exspensive. If you want to research it on Google, the name is K and S metals,I'm checking it out after this letter, thanks for the info....Mark Korda(mark.korda@myfairpoint.net)

The K & S #181 U-channel is discontinued, so any stock at local stores will slowly become consumed.

Mark/dawkus: I'm good on my U-channel.  An AC member long ago sent me a long length of it a while back and I made several Longhorns with it.  Thanks for asking tho, much appreciated and very nice of you :)

Make sure you add the 1000cst silicone oil to the coils and entry point of the cantilever into the housing of the cartridge...this gentle damping is further help in taming some of the Grado nasties  :thumb:
