Itouch as remote sometimes does not connect......
« on: 9 Dec 2009, 01:01 am »
I have a headless Mac Mini that I control with an Itouch.  Oftentimes, after bringing the Mini out of sleep mode, the Itouch will not be able to find my Itunes library.  This seems especially true if I do not activate the Itouch quickly after bringing the computer out of sleep mode.  If I wait too long, I have to restart Mini or just put it back into sleep mode.  If the Itouch connects, then there are no problems during the listening sessions.

Do others wrestle with this?  If so, any suggestions?  Thanks!

This is the first time I have heard of this. What app are you using to connect? I use Remote and soemtimes it takes a sec to connect but I think that is more to do with my WiFi than anything else.

Any time I have had connection problems with my Touch as remote it has had to do with the time it takes for my Touch to connect to my WIFI network. I don't think I have had any issues with the Touch and my laptop talking to one another.

I too use the "Remote" app.

Thanks guys.  I too use the Remote App.  When it connects, it does take a second or so, which is fine.  But in the case of this problem it will try to connect for several seconds then request a different library.

Since you don't experience this, I wonder if something is wrong with the Itouch?  Anyway, it worked fine yesterday, so maybe with firmware updates, etc. it will go away.

Right, could just need an update.

Yeah, my Remote app sometimes takes 10 seconds or so to first find my Wifi (nothing to do with music server, etc) so I just wait for little wifi signal icon (concentric arcs) then go for it.  I also had intermittent wifi issues during playback until I set the iTouch for "stay connected".  Downside is battery life but I have a recharging dock right in the media room.

Just FYI: recently downloaded new Apple Itouch updates ($5, WTF??) have cured my intermittent connection problems.  And, it seems Itouch is connecting faster, as well as responding a bit faster than previously.

I have downloaded regular software updates for iTunes, iPod Mini, iPod Video and Airport Express, but have never heard of an Apple software updates costing anything.  The exception of course would be new Operating System versions for iMac and MacBook.

iTouch users, for some reason, need to pay for the Remote app and subsequent upgrades

Not true here.  I'm a longtime iTouch user.  The Apple Remote app is free.  Things like the OS 3.x "upgrades" cost money, but I never went there.   And apps like iPeng, etc.

I could have sworn very early on they were charging for it. Oh well, maybe I'm mixing it up with the OS upgrade.

Yes.  The OS 3.x "upgrades" must be what I purchased.  And, given the performance upgrade (shorter connection time, reliability of connections), I'd say it was $ well spent.

Merry Christmas to fellow Apple Audiophiles!
