Good concert DVDs?
« on: 30 Nov 2009, 03:44 am »
I've become something of a fan of concert vids. It's fun to not only hear music, but see it performed. Maybe I'm just part of the ADD generation that needs multiple stimulation.

Regardless, the few I have so far:

Peter Gabriel's "Growing Up": This is not just a concert but performance art. Just fantastic. Of couse I've been a PG fan from the the Genesis days. Sounds great too for a live recording. (there is a song called "Animal Nation" that is sort of cheesy, which I usually skip)
I like the darker, heavier sound of the "UP" album. Seems that not the usual case, as the album and tour basically flopped.

PG's "Secret World":  Muffled sound, but not horrible. Grainy video, but the stage show is  really cool. Plus there's the exceptionally good band.

Neil Finn's "Sessions at West 54th":  Straight ahead no frills show but fantastic sound. This can almost be a reference recording even w/ my el cheapo Samsung DVD feeding my DAC via optical.  Neil's one of my all time favorite musicians.

Neil Finn's "Seven Worlds Collide":  Pretty lousy sound and marginal video, but the music is so much fun (even w/ the occasional mistakes) I still love it.

Eagles "Farewell One":  Lavish production, great video quality, good sound overall, but a bit too bright. Drum sound excellent though. Some serious eye candy in the audience. I think the video producer must have planted a few of those babes.

Alice in Chains "Unplugged":  Good sound. Fun to hear a really heavy band stripped down to the essentials. Holds up really well.

I'm going to order the Genesis reunion concert soon. I've heard good things about a Pink Floyd concert from somwhere in Europe.

What else is good? I saw mention of a Dave Matthews show on BluRay, but I've only got old fashioned tech at this point. Please post your suggestions.

David Gilmour - Live in Gdansk (latest. . .VERY good)
David Gilmour - Remeber That Night - Live From The Royal Albert Hall (2nd latest; from the same tour as above)
Pink Floyd - Pulse
David Gilmour - Live (2001; Floyd-light)

PG's concert vids are a tough act to follow.  :green:

Some of my other favorites are Floyd (Gilmour's Delicate Sound of Thunder and Water's most recent release), NIN (also in BD), RHCP's Live in Milan, King Crimson, older Stevie Ray, newer Moby, Richard Thompson, and, again, PG.

I'd love to find a band-produced release of a good Tool show, but they say that doesn't happen.

Not really a AIC fan, but that is a fabulous disc.

Don't know if Peter Frampton's - "Frampton Comes Alive" is on DVD, but that would be worth considering if it's available.
