Not quite folksy, by Aimee Mann is worth the listen. The "Magnolia" soundtrack is truly awesome. The movie is quite good as well.

Maybe Kate is not that well known outside of northern California but she wrote some great songs that you may recognize a covers by other artists. "Give Yourself to Love", "Across the Great Divide", "Boy From Tupelo" (covered by Emmylou Harris).

Chris-- Melanie's Candles in Rain remains a favorite to this day.

Neko Case--whether she is singing alt country, pop or power pop with The New Pornographers, her voice is haunting and enchanting to me.

I second Buffy Sainte Marie. She wrote some songs that I think would surprise most people -- "Universal Soldier" (covered by Donovan), "Until it's Time for You to Go" (covered by several very famous early crooners), "Tall Trees in Georgia" (covered by Eva Cassidy), "Up Where We Belong" (covered by Jennifer Warnes and Joe Cocker). Not quite the same vein as "Groundhog" and "Cod'ine".

Seeing as how the OP said he's a sucker for a lot of good female singing, I'll toss out Lucinda Williams. Not folk in the pure sense -- very alt-country with an attitude -- she's a real treat.

"Sadly, she seemed ill-prepared for life outside the convent. By 1985, then in her 50s, Deckers was overwhelmed by debt, with the Belgian government claiming she owed $63,000 in back taxes. Pushed to desperation when she thought she would lose her school, she swallowed a lethal amount of barbiturates with alcohol, and was joined by her companion of 10 years, Annie Pecher, a physiotherapist and a fellow former nun. Found near their bodies was a poignant note from both, asking for forgiveness and understanding: ''We hope God will welcome us. He saw us suffer, so He should show clemency.''

How ironic. Sworn to chastity and living pure most of her life. Then her and her "companion" take the coward's way out on booze and pills. They must have been really blazed before the lights went out.
