I see there are two versions by Penta; the KT88SC and the KT88-98.  Which version have you tried and what are your impressions.  Also, has anyone directly compared the two?

I have the SC version and have not heard the others, can't say how they compare. I do prefer the Penta KT88SC to the Sovetek, Svetlana and EH versions.

Same here, using the -SC version.  This directly due to Pez, Tyson, and our man above, mgalusha, all praising the Penta KT88-SC highly.  Considering each had similar sonic experiences in different amps and systems speaks volumes to me about consistency in QC and sonic character (or the lack thereof).  I mention in this thread the fact that the JJ KT88 has more sparkle in the treble than the Pentas.  Thus the Pentas are to my ear much more neutral and therefore sound more like real musicians in my listening space. Really likin' the sound right now.    Stay tuned to that thread I linked as I'll be plugging in the Gold Lions next week.    BR, JakeJ

Count me in for another SC. They seem to be very good reliable and most importantly musical tubes. Please dontt buy them though you'll inflate the price.

I agree that the sc version just edges out sonically the 88-98, but both are fabulously musical. The SC(solid plates) also have better reliability and hold their bias much better than the 88-98(3-hole version). The best current kt88 tubes I've tried in my VAC Musicblocs by far. I also heartily recommend www.dougstubes.com as well. Enjoy.
