Good, thin 2 channel speakers?
« on: 7 Oct 2009, 10:16 pm »
Hi all, not sure if this is the right place, but let me give it a shot (at least a fellow St. Louis audiophile is the moderator!)   :D

We're putting our house on the market, and as such I will likely need to remove my big speakers (Dali Euphonia MS4's).  In their place I will either have nothing  :o or a very thin set of speakers (maybe 7" wide at most).  Are there any decent speakers out there with this restriction on dimensions?  Height is not an issue.  I guess I could also put two smaller speakers on top of the console table on either side of the tv.

Anyway, this seemed like a question for HT experts as I'm aware of any pure audiophile very thin speakers.   Thanks very much in advance!!

The new Omega sticks could be a good option if you want to try single driver.

How about a pair of Aperion 6Ts?

Aperion 6T

These are front ported so if you need to shove them against the wall the bass will still sound pretty good. I've got a pair in my HT if you want to give them a listen (I'm just past Six Flags on the other side of Eureka).

Lemme know.

do you have room for outboard x-over, extra amp, and a pair of subs?  this will open up your options a lot...

How about a pair of Aperion 6Ts?

The requirement was "7" wide at most".

The Aperion 6Ts are 7.75" wide.  If you want to go with ~ 8" wide cabinets, I'm sure we could come up with a list of 50 models.  But at your specification (and I'm sure we could find a few others), the list is still rather small.

OK Fine...how about the 4Ts (4" H x 5" W x 7.5" D) or the 5Ts (38" H x 6.3" W x 8" D)

Thanks for the "props" there man, I would feel remiss if I didn't acknowledge your request. However, I'm the last guy you should talk to about narrow speakers.  :lol:
I could think of a bunch of bookshelf units (as we all could) if the width happened to be increased to maybe 10" or 12", which shouldn't be too much of a sore thumb to perspective buyers.
Tell me, is the the real estate agent that's telling you the MS4's are "too much" or wifey, or...???

Not sure who they belonged to, but in the recent RMAF pictures, I saw a pair of lightly stained wood speakers that looked like they're 5" wide, by 5' tall. Rather unusual looking, but would definitely fit your requirements (price not withstanding).

never mind.....That tall thin wooden speaker I saw in a photo was one of those acoustic Tibetan bell thingies.  :duh:
My mistake.  :oops:

Bob

p.s. Scott, how wide are the Lowthers?
I'm thinking of the "Lowther Magic Sticks" that Mr. Blackmore is using.  aa

Doug, I didn't see those, but they sure look like they'd fit the bill.  :thumb:

Funny how the mind plays trick on you (me).
The picture that Pez (Jason) took that I had in mind was this one.....  :duh: :duh: :duh:
(After a second glance, the wooden thing in the middle is certainly NOT a speaker)  :roll:

Guys, thanks very much for all the suggestions!  I'm going to be checking these out - a bit of insomnia tonight, but a nice rain storm is lulling me back to sleep...   :sleep:

Also, yes, books shelves if they were say 9" wide could work on either side of the tv on the console table.  Probably would be too close together for a great soundstage, but this is a constrained situation (hopefully done soon enough!)...

I might consider a set of Totem Arro's for that application.  Some lovely veneer choices too.

Doh!  I completely forgot about the Totem Arro, a popular "mainstream" floorstanding audiophile speaker at only 5.1" wide. and only 7.1" deep.

i listened to arro's in my system; i found them to be extremely nice for small scale music.  but, when i tried to get them to rock out, they fell flat on their faces.  even when actively crossed over to subs at 80hz.  the tiny (6" wide) proac tablette 8 reference signature mini monitors, on the other hand, were fantastic, even cranked up, as long as subs were inwolved...  these are an excellent choice, imo...  they will rock even w/o subs, w/all but the most extreme bass-heavy content music, ime.

I think two of the larger Totems, i.e. the Sttaf and the Hawk fit the width criteria and should have a much bigger rock out factor.

Definitive Technologies has a bunch of them. I suspect Jamo, Kef and Monitor Audio will have one or two models as well.

Audio Physics probably has more than one model that will fit your criteria.

You're right.

Staff = 6.3"W
Hawk = 6.8"W
