Looking for high end car speakers
« on: 15 Sep 2009, 03:15 pm »
Im in the market for some nice 6.5" component speakers for my car.  I have my heart set on the dynaudio esotec, but I don't know if I want to spend the money if I can find a cheaper comparable speaker.  Some other speakers I have been looking at but havn't heard yet are: diamond audio m6 series with silk dome tweeters, alpine type x refrence series, infinity reference (listened to these at best buy and didn't like them).

Does anyone know anybody selling some nice speakers or have any of the diamond or alpine models I listed that I can listen to?  I was also half thinking about using the 6.5" fostex full range with a t-amp and adding a tweeter, and getting some 7" woofers to fill in the bass.  But Im unsure about using a t-amp off 12v battery.  Thanks for any suggestions.

If you're willing to take the time to tune it (and have the head unit or crossover to do the processing), I'd highly recommend skipping the pre-made component sets and buying individual drivers :)

Tons of value...it can be very time-consuming to get right, though. The results are worth it, IMO ;)

Well here is my situation:  My car is a mazdaspeed 3.  I have a pioneer avic f700(double din with nav) head unit and I have a Concept 350W 2 channel amp that Im not using.  I wasn't planning on doing subs in this car, so this amp was for some nice speakers.  If I go the route with the fostex and t-amp, I could use this amp on some 7" woofers in my back doors tunes as subs.  Thought this might be interesting to try.

So in order to go individual drivers, I would need another amp.  And I have a feeling that would end up costing more because most good amps costs more than a crossover.

I have done a lot of car installs.  The only thing I haven't done is elaborate fabrication like building a new dash out of fiberglass.  And I was wanting ~1" silk dome tweeters because I think they sound the best and so they will fit in the door sail.

Is that zapco sponser the company that makes amps?  I know Josh at JML really pushes those amps.  You ever been to his showroom in fenton?

I am going wideband in my new car.. the driver will be from H-Audio..

The issue that you are going to run into.. if going wideband in a door.. image placement and height would be almost impossible to obtain.. now if you did a set of tweeters say playing 12kish and up at a steep slope then I'd say that you would be heading in the right direction as the tweeters will help with stage height.. But would not IMO be ideal since the reason to go fullrange is to eliminate point sources.

If you want something simple.. just go a traditional 2way and play with phasing to get good focus... as it will take processing and going active to truly make it super nice and obtain full coherency.

Yes, my sponsor is Zapco and has been for a few years.. awesome amps.. specially the ones with built in processing.. And yes Josh has been a dealer for along time.. and his shop is beautiful.

let me konw what other questions you have man!!!!!!   aa

I'm really enjoying the Focal components that I have. I think they are the polyglass series. You can find them reasonable on ebay. They are the first car speakers that actually remind me of my home rig. Recommended!

We'll have to talk more about this at Scott's GAS bash in a few weeks.  I would like to do the fullrange fostex without a tweeter, but as you said the soundstage wouldn't be right.  Which is why I wanted to throw some tweeters in there.  I was only going to use 1 crossover for the tweeter and leave the fostex without one, and I didnt know if the tweeter would blend that well.  Then I was worried about using them in an IB situation with the door because I have only heard them in ported boxes.

With all that being said, I thought a good pair of 2-way component speakers either 6.5 or 7" would give me the sound quality and low freq response I wanted without taking months to plan/install.  Since I bought my house, I enjoy spending my time messing with home audio a lot more than car audio.

Thanks for the input santacore.  I was looking at those speakers, but the ones in the $300 range all look like metal tweeters.  I am trying to stay away from metal tweeters because they are a little too bright for my taste.

Mine were in the $300 range. I think the tweeters were T14's or something like that. They sound very smooth to my ear.

I run a set of Zapco components in my Accord these days - excellent speakers.

I would also consider a set of the Focals, I have heard them well installed in cars too.

I had a set of polykevlar Focal 6.5" components that I was really happy with. The Ti tweeter will make you reconsider, it's a great unit.
