Here in Canada, some years ago , there where government grants given out to advance our national development in various arts and sciences ,bla, bla, bla!  I have assumed that NRB stood for......... National Research Board". Pehaps James knows otherwise but this seems a logical assumpion. The Energy speaker co. used this to develope there transducers to a high degree of performance and maybe Bryston did too. Anyway it has resulted into the very fine world class products we have today.  REDBOOK. :thumb:

The Bryston site has owners manuals for the older gear and they refer to NRB/NPB, but don't indicate what NRB/NPB is exactly.  My guess is that it is something related to the input connections.

We must not blame Bryston for name his amp with NRB letters, whatever it means.
Lets wait Mr.James Taner or someone of Bryston explain it. I also want to know it and SST etc...

May as well blow it wide open before James replies and clarify 4B "e" version as well (immediately prior to NRB, not sure if it had the rectangular or toroidal transformers)

Funny...it's actually a comment from Chris Russell in reference to a 1996 Stereophile review..

Footnote 1: The Bryston 4B-NRB power amplifier excelled in its ability to coax deep bass out of lazy subwoofers. In fact, the review dubbed the 4B-NRB the "Bass Master." But when I talked with Chris Russell?Bryston's VP of Engineering and a specialist in dry humor?during the 4B-NRB review period, he refused to say exactly what the initials "NRB" stand for. Caught off guard later at Stereophile's 30th Anniversary party at the 1992 CES, Chris finally confessed that "NRB" meant "no real bass." Sure, Chris!?Larry Greenhill

Hi Guys,

Back from Cedia.

The NRB and NPB were names made up by our shipper at the time. We were moving from the standard 2B, 4B' 3B's etc. to newer designs and we were concerned that the old and new versions of the amplifiers would get mixed up in the stock room.

So Peter our shipper at the time decided to write NRB and NPB on the side of the newer amp shipping boxes so he would not mix them up. The 'NRB' stood for 'NEW REGULAR BALANCED' and the NPB stood for 'NEW PRO BALANCED'.

TRIH - (The rest is history)

That is similar to the 'R2' that was marked on the box of my new 4B-SST2

Your shipper, Ken, mentioned that he marked the boxes thus to differentiate the amps with the new radiused faceplates from those with the unradiused ends ...
