A few more things I can scratch off the check list..

The side inlays are done... these are the last pieces of the puzzle before I start stretching fleece to fiberglass.. These will be veneered the same as the stands.. and puts the total side wall thickness to 2 1/2 inches..

OK... I got fleece stretched on one of the speakers.. you can finally get an idea of the overall shape. After I get the other one tackled, I then will start to fiberglass. All that you see in gray fleece will be painted.. the sides will have a flushed veneered inlay and the stands/enclosures will be veneered to match..

HOPE YOU LIKE!!!!!!!

Very cool.
When you say you're going to "fiberglass" the next step, I assume you're going to apply resin only?
Also, do you fill the voids/cavities between the fleece and the MDF? Or do you just leave the cavities open?

Very cool Randy!  aa

Hey Bob... Thank you!!!

The first step is resin only.. it takes allot of resin the first pass to make sure it's a 100 soaked through.. then a few layers of resin/matt..

there are voids now.. but that's why I overbuild the living sh*t out of it initially.. but it will be dense as I still have 1/4 of glass and duraglass to lay down before the fill primer

The second one is wrapped with fleece. Next is to make the bases for both... then off to Fiberglassing..

ok, worked on the stands today.. and I have fleece pulled on one of them. I will make the transistion from stand to base better once I smooth out the stand and veneer it before I bridge the gap between the two to create a tight fit...

I'm curious.  When you come up with a vision/design, do you sketch it out on paper first?   Do you have a sketch book with a lot of designs, or do you just see a concept in your head and then go about creating it?

Hey Josh...

Both.. I have a folder with 20-30 sketches of pieces I want to build.. usually a side profile and front shot. very rough though.. and I usually change a few things once I start actually building.. I let the piece decide were it wants to go rather than force something..

I also have a few sketches of tube amps that I want to build.. but I have to know all the components involved before building.. not that I would see myself ever doing that all the time.. but I have to get them out of my head..lol

but it would be cool to have everything in the signal path built by me to were everything has a theme/flow. Even if it means making the shells for amps/preamps and having a partnering mfg to do the internals.. as that is over my head...

You could even build the rack the equipment sits on for a true "flowing theme".  aa

Just thought I'd put a bug in your ear Randy.  :icon_twisted:

you are the devil Bob!!!!

but already thought of it... infact, 1 step further to were rack/amp/preamp are all integrated to 1 piece    :icon_twisted:

Thanks Randy.  I am not a super creative person.  I am the other type, you know the boring one.  Anyway, when I am doing a design I always seem to change my mind a bunch of times.  I always get hung up on what I am trying to accomplish.  I've always wondered how the artists do it.

BTW, I don't know why but your current creation reminds me of a rooster head for some reason.

I've always wondered how the artists do it.

Particularly when the medium is easily changeable, like painting, carving, sculpture....How do you know when it's finished?

I guess the same could be said for other creative endeavors, like writing or music composition.  At some point you have to move on and say .... done!

I get that all the time.. but that's were the project manager in me takes over and decides to apply whatever I want to add to another piece down the road..

can't bring the heat/thunder/bells and whistles the first time.. it's hard to then top it.. which applies to so many other things   8)

It is only when I see creative designs like this, that I realize how inside the box my own creations tend to be - and they are open baffle!

Wow, what cool designs you come up with!

....How do you know when it's finished?

This reminds me of a joke where one of the people in a group touring the Steinway factory spots an old craftsman patiently and meticulously polishing a piano that already looks like it has a perfect finish. "How ever do you know when you're finished", she says to him.
The man's expression suggests this has never concerned him.
"When they take it away!" he says.

LOL..

One thing that I find myself doing is after said piece is finished, I find things that I wold have done differently.. I use this to come up with new designs etc.. to me it's and endless pallet.. and I use both my family and my favorite musicians for inspiration.. I want my pieces to be as beautiful as the music they play..
