Penderaudio 310 protoype speakers
« on: 31 Aug 2009, 02:11 am »
Hey guys I just wanted to show you all my new baffle design, that I hope to put into production in the very near future. These are the prototypes for my new line of speakers.
I'm a lurker on the forum and most others but keep tabs on whats going on 8)

Anyways I have had the project done for about a month now and have nailed down a design that I think is a great for value, dynamics, output and overall aesthetics.

The design is based on, and uses Hawthorne drivers.
1 10" Hawthorne Silver Iris coax per side
2 10" Hawthorne Augies per side
Solid Bamboo construction carbonized vertical grain about 1.5 inches thick 16" wide about 37" tall
Source EQ:
McIntosh MCD 7005 (variable volume control)
DBX-223 active X-over used between 10"Augies and Mid/High at 115hz, 24db slope.
B&K ST 1400 on Highs (125watts x2 @ 8ohms)
The stock Hawthorne passive X-over is used for the Mid --->Compression Driver.
B&K EX4240 on the 10" Augies (280watts x2 @ 4ohms)

The mid bass from the 10" Augies is great! very warm and brings the music alive more than most speakers without becoming overbearing! it's hard to keep the level flat on the woofers because they blend so well.

Here is the pics.

Check out the "Trading Post" they might be for sale

Let me know what you think  :D

Gorgeous stuff!
I imagine that these "little" speakers will fill even larger rooms with a big, open sound.   :o]

Ya they can hold there own in almost any size room, but work great in medium size rooms. My living room is 12' x 18' they play strong down to about 35hz.
In a really big room I would just add more 10" augies, say 4 per side :D. Or the 15" Augies could always be used!

I do plan on building a 510 speaker with 4 10" Augies and one PSI per side.

Great to see more people using plyboo - nice qualities for speakers.  Nice design!

Angaria,
Believe it or not, theses baffles are not Ply-boo. They are bamboo flooring left over from my kitchen remodel :D I had two boxes left over and really liked the look so I planed them down to about 1/2" thick and glued them all together into a large plank.

For the production models I will offer bamboo ply because it took me a month to prep the wood and glue it all together. The only downfall of the Ply-boo is that it is hard to get in Northern Wisconsin and has to be shipped in which is pretty costly.

Here is a few pics of the bamboo prep.
