This thing is insane...
« on: 28 Aug 2009, 10:17 pm »
Well my room became officially "Brystonized" today at 1715hrs.

If I was a proponent of "colourful metaphors'," please note that this page would now be entirely blue...

The energy that this system can sustain is simply incredible. Actually, it is insane - period, end of story.

It will hurt you if you are not careful :nono:

It truly is a big, nasty iron fist in a velvet glove. This thing can roar and at the same time I could not believe the "light-sucking-inky-black-hole-silence."  It is also as delicate as a 90 pound ballerina in a lacy pink tutu. The detail is awesome at very low power volume levels.

I am in awe at the music I never heard from my CDs :o

Does it have bass? Well duh - just ask my neighbour 2 houses down. I actually had a morbid fascination watching stuff vibrate off of my desk (kraftwerk minimum-maximum). I have never had my pant legs vibrate just listening to music before, for some of you - please keep your mind out of the gutter :nono: :D

The 28Bs/BP-26 and JBLs are an awesome combination. The JBL Project Arrays are simply flawless.

My audio guys told me that I had no idea of the performance level of this system - they were right, I am in shock.

I would really like to write more - hmm... not really as I am lying through my teeth. For some reason, I have much better things to do right now. Maybe I'll jot more down in a few weeks!

Be well...

Whew...thank God I'll never get to demo the 28s down here...it might tempt me to get a set

...and I've already convinced myself that I don't need 'em :)

As well as the 4BSST/BP6 and JBL Studio L890s!

But, that is a "dream" system for sure to me! You are very fortunate!

Dave,

do you know anything about the JBL 'LS80' speakers? if so- what do you think regarding my system (the SP2 is not in use).

thanx,

Yeah, those are a new model for the US and Canada. It's supposed to be better quality and sound than the Studio L series. I personally can't say as I haven't heard them (or seen them "in the flesh") yet.

I'd say they'd sound great. If what I'm using is of any indication.

Can you audition them?

Well I have being listening to the new system for approximately 15-20 hours and I would like to share a few of my opinions thus far. Please bear with me as I am a newbie to this hobby and I will most likely have the elegance of a wounded water buffalo mired down in the mud all while being fed on by a pride of lions.

The speakers are JBL 1400 Project Array and I have around 350 hours of operating time on them. Low frequency transducer is 14 inch with a 4 inch copper edge wound voice coil - outstanding bass. High and ultra high frequency transducers are 3 and 1 inch compression drivers respectively. I am sold on horns.

The Bryston electronics are of course, the 28Bs and the BP-26. Cables are by Argentum Acoustics, Aureus-2BW for the speakers and Mythos is for the XLR cable between the amplifier and preamplifier. The CD player is an older Marantz 5 - disk model and is connected to the preamplifier using a single ended connector. I have an Esoteric X-05 CD/SACD on order and am looking forward to see how much this will raise the "bar."

To top it all off, a Bryston BR2 keeps me firmly planted in my chair. By the way, the BR2 is built like a tank - no surprises here.

My wife came down to listen to some music this morning and she was very impressed by the detail and bottom end - basically the overall presence of the music. At the time, I had my music playing at an ambient level and I was mentioning that it was unheard of to get this kind of performance from a 1KW amplifier at such a low volume. Actually, according to the amplifier spec sheets, they are  both rated at 1280 watts.

Most other companies would advertise them as 1200 watt monos and charge accordingly - not Bryston, we'll call them 1 Kilowatt monos and throw in an extra 20% for free.

It was interesting what my wife said next...

"I think that these people who build these things know what they are doing"

How can you say it any better? I love her so much.

I was reading a post by Wbimmer who commented on the un-noticeable loudness levels produced by these amplifiers. I could not agree more, with the clarity and detail of the audio you can have the volume higher than what you think it is. I have no problem picking out the different instruments in a very complex piece and I can make out lyrics without looking for the lyrics page. I was in awe of the cello used by Persephone in AtmaGyan. I never appreciated the complexities of this instrument - very impressive. Bass control is outstanding, the JBLs/28Bs are an awesome combination. Low frequencies are precise, very sharp and crisp - I have not heard any roll on at all. Mids and highs are awesome - very rich and fluid.

I mostly enjoy Goth music - especially the female performers. You really notice the silence before and after the signer takes a breath, truly breathtaking. Lisa Gerrard (Dead Can Dance) is stunning. Lisa Gerrard also did most of the background music for the movie "Gladiator." Enigma is absolutely haunting on this system. Rich Joyce (The last Dance) guitar work  just shines on this system.

I can actually feel the loathing in Marilyn Manson during his performances - very refreshing.

This system is also very revealing - if it is on the CD, you are going to notice it. Case-in-point, I was listening to The Police, Every Breath You Take and I noticed a recording glitch on my CD - I have never noticed this before.

All this from electronics not 24 hours out of the box - I can only imagine what it will sound like with a few more hours on it.

Dave,

i auditioned a pair of LS60 speakers and was impressed about the clean sound. i never payed much attention to (JBL) Horn speakers but now i guess i have to...
the LS80 are the bigger ones and therefore a deeper bass can be expected?! the dealer where i auditioned the LS60 said that he can order a brandnew pair of LS80 and i could safe another 600 euros!!! so they would be 2600 euros (pair) insted of 3200 euros. sounds like a big deal for me...but i am not experienced enough with this type of speaker so i just don't know what to do

Great set-up Laundrew and great to see you all revved up :thumb: :thumb:
When I got my MPS2/BP26MC combo and traded up from a 4BSST to a 14BST, my dealer cautioned me: "just remember where you are on the volume dial because it will creep up higher and higher when the music details and reality come through.
But just a bit more ... one more 'up' ... oh come on ... who will notice ...a bit more ...
(for all you nit-pickers, the system also sounds divine at low volumes but you know what I'm talking about )
I wish I had the 28BSST2 ... For me Torus is first. Slowly: "all good things to those who wait.
Congrats Laundrew and enjoy.
