New PMC's
« on: 24 Aug 2009, 04:31 pm »
Hi All,

I know this is not the sale section of Audiocircle but given the PMC connection:

I am buying a new pair of the MB'2s so if anyone has interest in my IB2 Black Ash's send me an email at jamestanner@bryston.com and I will give you details.

Hi James, that sounds good. Which MB2s are you going for? The i-series or the MB2-As?

Btw James may I ask why you chose not to go with the active version?

Mmmm.........

Gotta say I love my MB2's . Still running in but the bass driver has always been a fav of mine, used many in commercial applications so thats a nice upgrade from the IB series piston bass.

Nice choice  :D

Mr. H, the MB2 bass driver's a bit of a double edged sword though! I've recently moved mine to a much smaller room, and surprisingly the imaging and sound staging between the speakers is quite amazing for the speaker's large size (they cant image much on the outside as too close to side walls). The bass however is overwhelming the room; any bass heavy tracks sound like a booming, humming mess (think PA style sound)... can't really position them elsewhere due to the restrictive size of the room... any thoughts on how i can tame this problem? (EQ type solution etc?)

Are they up on stands?

If not that will greatly help uncouple the cabinet from the floor.

Its wierd, my BB5's are currently in a tiny room and I would say LACK bass!!!

If your issue is room based then room eq would sound likr the correct answer - I prefer to use that in systems but many perfer the direct signal route instead.

Yes, they're on their stands (filled with sand). I will give one last shot at repositioning and trying to add some more damping to the room. otherwise will think about eq.  my listening position is barely 8 feet away from them, but the sound stage is huge...  besides the bass damping issue they sound very  good indeed...  love that mid-range.

Haha, BB5s *lacking* in bass? That has to be a first (well, a second for this week, after the mighty Kuro speakers slaying the 802s )

I had that issue with a hardwood floor and speakers too close to the wall... pulling them forward a bit into the room and throwing a rug on the floor may help a bit... but I'm sure you're on top of all that a lot more than I am.

Hi

I was incorrect- the MB2's are the '+' not the 'I' version.
Maybe I will turn them into active?

Hi James, I don't believe there's an MB2 '+', so I'm thinking you must have acquired the regular MB2 speakers.

I would in fact be quite interested in hearing about how your speakers respond to different combinations of amps. You obviously have access to a far greater choice of amplification than the average user.

Activation would of course be the best way, but how would you go about it? Btw PMC use am 875HT amp for their regular MB2A, and I'm also interested in seeing if a passive with the new bigger square amps will approach the performance of the Active with the old, smaller 875.

Please let us know your thoughts once you've received the speakers.

I would probably confirm with the dealer exactly which model is being peddled here! :thumb:

I'm pretty sure there's no such thing as an MB2+ (at least if the PMC website is accurate)...

Hi James-Wanted to ask about stands for the MB2's. Are you going to use the PMC stands or another brand like Sound Anchor, also the height of the stands?.

Thanks!
