  • In time whats deserved always get served.
I also like to put bands into Pandora and see what it plays.

I do the same same thing with Last FM Picked up a few good bands ffrom here.

ED

BobM

"pink floyd - dark side of the moon"

For something relatively new (from this decade) you could check out Porcupine Tree "The Sky Moves Sideways". Lots of other stuff that is wekk regarded by this band, but this one is more Floydish (as is some other of PT's older stuff).

wow wow wow!  :thumb:

sorry i've been gone for the better part of the day, but i've been doing what any good audiocircler should be doing and that's enjoying some music with a fair amount of golf and delerium tremens thrown in the mix!

a quick note: thank you all for the recommendations, i'm downloading all now and can't wait to play some tracks. i also wanted to point out that for some of my favorite artists above, i do own their entire discographies. i was hoping this post would lead me to new artists, which it certainly has.  i wanted to pick my favorite albums from each artist because this represents my preferred part of their musical range...if that makes any sense. for example, i much prefer kind of blue vs. bitches brew...

ok, well over and out. i promise to report back with a detailed report. i also picked myself up some fresh pears, apples, and manchego cheese to go with the ale & music...i wish this week's vacation would go on forever. :)

Tremens, manchengo, music and fruit!  You do know how to enjoy your time off!!

In the vein of this thread, based on the Tremens I would grab some Houblon Chouffe or Golden Drak.

If you like Blue Trane, you will like these:

John Coltrane - Giant Steps
Miles Davis - 'Round Midnight' and 'Milestones,' maybe also 'Kind of Blue'
Lee Morgan - The Sidewinder
Kenny Dorham - Whistle Stop
Art Blakey - Free for All

richidoo - while i had the first four albums you recommended, i'm extremely grateful for the three artists that are new to me.  all three albums will definitively get some play time, with my favorite by far being whistle stop...i've already played it through twice.  i haven't yet taken a liking to the hard bop style of jazz...for me i still enjoy the slow-grooving introspective small group ensembles, where every note and high hat  is highlighted by the absence of surrounding noise. the art blakey is probably on the periphery of my jazz enjoyment experience right now; as it's about as hard-hitting and fast paced as i can sit down and enjoy.

Depesche Mode - Playing the Angel, Exciter

Pink Floyd - Momentary Lapse of Reason, The Division Bell, The Final Cut

David Gilmour (Pink Floyd guitarist) - On an Island

XTC - The Big Express, Oranges and Lemons, Skylarking

Thomas Dolby - Wireless, The Flat Earth, Aliens ate my Buick, Astronauts
and Heretics

Billy Idol - self titled, Rebel Yell, Cyberpunk.

Alan Parsons Project - Tales of Mystery and Imagination (Edgar Allen Poe),
Eve, Eye in the Sky.

Yes - The Yes Album, Fragile, Close to the Edge, 90125, Relayer.

Neil Young - Harvest, Prairie Winds, After the Gold Rush.

I better stop.

Wayner

wayner - absolutely don't stop! i have the complete pink floyd and depeche mode discographies. i enjoy the daivd gilmour but can't help feel it's a subdued pink floyd....for obvious reasons. i'm going to listen to this one some more and decide if it's a keeper. the xtc and thomas dolby, while both had extremely interesting effects, did not capture my attention for long-term listening. i'm going to take my laptop over to a friend's house that has maggies and see if the lack of involvement is due to my system setup or just personal preference. the neil young i have a compilation album of (don't shoot me!), but i plan on revisiting albums to see if there's more for me than just the well-known tracks.

i think billy idol and alan parsons projects will be more along the lines of single tracks versus entire albums...i'm so thankful that digital music management allows for such precise control of individual tracks and combined playlists.

have not yet gotten through yes, but i will soon. :)

thanks again

bobm - love it! the sounds are definitely psychodelic and ambient, but all of the tracks have a definite rhythm and build-up that is impossible for me to not get drawn into.  there's a bit of jam band, a bit of funk, and a whole lot of enjoyment. if you have anything else to throw in, i'm literally all ears.

lonewolfny - i don't think i'm quite yet ready for hard bop yet...i feel like this may be an acquired taste and somewhere i'll revisit down the road, but for now i'm enjoying my jazz, mellow, subtle, and cool...much like sipping a nice mint julep in the hot summer :). the sonny rollins, however, is a masterpiece.  very glad you took the time to recommend this one.

well, i'm getting through these slowly but surely. be patient with me guys.

JP78,
I think you should put these bands and albums into Allmusic or Amazon and see what comps. pop up.  I'll just list some other albums I have by the same artists...
Quote
radiohead - the bends, ok computer
Radiohead - I love Pablo Honey myself
depeche mode - ultra, violator
Depeche Mode - Playing the Angel is great
coldplay - a rush of blood to the head
Coldplay - Viva La Vida or X&Y
miles davis - kind of blue
Any Miles Davis will be good
massive attack - mezzanine
Massive Attack - Try Collected and Blue Lines
the roots - when things fall apart
 No good with hip hop:dunno:
john coltrane - blue trane
Coltrane - The self titled LP Coltrane has the best opening cut of any album, I also like Giant Steps and A Love Supreme
thievery corporation - the richest man in babylon
Thievery Corporation - Check out Songs from the Thievery Hi-Fi, The Mirror Conspiracy and The Cosmic Game
air - premiers symptomes
You know more electronica than me:scratch:
pink floyd - dark side of the moon
Pink Floyd - Any Pink Floyd will be good, Meddle is underappreciated, imho
marta argerich - rachmaninov concerto 3
Classical Piano - sorry can't help :dunno:
rokysopp - melody a.m.
Rokysopp - I've only heard Melody A.M. myself
portishead - dummy
Portishead - Live Roseland NYC and Third are good

airborn - i have every single album you've mentioned...clearly you're a person of impeccable tastes  8). if you feel the urge to branch out with recommendations of any other artists, please post for the benefit of everyone reading (myself included). thanks.

Have fun JP!

Anything/everything Madlib has done (Yesterdays New Quintet, Sound Directions, Quasimoto, Jaylib, Madvillain....) Especially Shades of Blue.  It's an essential purchase.

http://www.amazon.com/Shades-Blue-Madlib/dp/B00009OOI6
http://www.last.fm/music/Madlib/Shades+Of+Blue

Grizzly Bear
's Veckatimest has been one of my favorite albums of the year.

I'm a big fan of Bradford Cox and his work in Deerhunter and Atlas Sound. You might enjoy them.

stereocilia

persisting1, thanks, I'm benefitting from these suggestions, too.

JP78,
You might like Doves, or possibly even The Beta Band if you like Coldplay.  Also Stereolab is another band with the female vocal/electronica sound.

lt5dude

I don't believe anyone has mentioned these:
Cannonball Adderley- Somethin' Else
The Dave Brubeck Quartet- Time Out

If you don't already have them, check them out! Must-have classics, both!

sts9fan

Ooooo yeah madlib for sure.  Madvillian is great as is Shades of Blue although I can get bored of it.  From Madvillian move to MF Doom.  I recomend (due to your like of The Roots) "The Mouse and the Mask" but the real raw MF Doom is more the "Mmmmmmm Food" and "Venomous Villian"

JoshK

"pink floyd - dark side of the moon"

For something relatively new (from this decade) you could check out Porcupine Tree "The Sky Moves Sideways". Lots of other stuff that is wekk regarded by this band, but this one is more Floydish (as is some other of PT's older stuff).

Great rec, should've thought of that one myself.

Agree with Death Cab for Cutie - Plans, but also Narrow Stairs

Also recommend a crossover, electronica pick
Postal Service - Give Up

A "super group" of Dntel, Death Cab's Ben Gibbard & the chick from ...can't remember, just excellent.

Muse is a good rec for a Radiohead compare, but I can only take that guy's voice for a few songs at a time.  Something is just a little too "white" in his vocals.
Try also Remy Zero, the albums as a whole are just OK, but some good tracks.

Might check out My Morning Jacket - It Still Moves & Z.

Sun Kil Moon - Ghosts of the Great Highway
(also anything by Red House Painters)

Andrew Bird - Armchair Apocrypha

Grandaddy - The Sophmore Slump is a great rec.
Can't believe no one recommended the Shins.
Also Spoon!

Arcade Fire - Neon Bible

The Dandy Warhols.

Pheonix - Wolfgang Amadeus Pheonix

You might give Wilco a try, starting at maybe, say Yankee Hotel Foxtrot or A Ghost is Born

Bloc Party
M83
Boards of Canada
Grove Armada
Morcheeba
the Hotel Costes series
Kruder & Dorfmeister - K&D Sessions
Jamiroquay
Maxwell
Alexi Murdoch

Calexico (a little oblique from your list, but it isn't a big stretch for a jazz/modern rock/eletronica lover)

Not particularly linked to your list, but you might like this still given your style...

Songs: Ohia - Magnolia Electric Co.
If you like this, check out the modern incarnate, Magnolia Electric Co.  Also, try Built to Spill.

P.S.  best to youtube some of these artists, or go to CDNow and listen to them to see if you like them.

That should hold you over for a little while...
