hey all, i've picked up a good twenty albums today online spending the day off browsing and updating my music library. i'm really motivated right now from so many great threads that i just want to keep the momentum going and get lost in new music all week :).

favorite music list (updated 2009.08.20) - so here are some of the albums i really enjoy; those of you who are familiar and listen to at least a couple of them please point me in the direction of more musical enjoyment:

- radiohead (the bends, ok computer)
- depeche mode (ultra, violator)
- coldplay  (a rush of blood to the head)
- miles davis (kind of blue)
- massive attack (mezzanine)
- the roots (when things fall apart)
- john coltrane (blue trane)
- thievery corporation (the richest man in babylon)
- air (premiers symptomes)
- pink floyd (dark side of the moon)
- marta argerich (rachmaninov concerto 3)
- rokysopp (melody a.m.)
- portishead (dummy)
- john mclaughlin & shakti (a saturday night in bombay)

note: with the exception of marta, i own the entire discographies for all of the artists above. i picked the specific albums above because they represent my favorite range of each artist. please recommend new artists that remind you of one or more of the above albums.

well this certainly isn't an exhaustive list, but i would include all of the above albums in my list of fifty 'deserted island' selections.

-------------------------------------------------

recommended music that i already own list (updated 2009.08.27) - here are artists that have been recommended in this thread that i already own. if you find yourself liking the artists above and below you may want to check these out too:

Hey JP,
I see you like Thievery Corporation and Massive Attack.  Here are two that fit the same genre.

Kruder & Dorfmeister - K&D Sessions
http://www.amazon.com/K-D-Sessions-Kruder-Dorfmeister/dp/B00000G257/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1250645740&sr=1-1

Orbital - In Sides
http://www.amazon.com/Sides-Orbital/dp/B00004T6UX/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1250645825&sr=1-3

Both well recorded.

I really love Air, I have most of the Thievery Corporation albums as well. Along those lines: Mark Farina - Air Farina, The Album Leaf - Into the Blue Again, Moby's album: Voodoo Child - The End of Everything

If you like Radiohead: try Grandaddy - The Sophtware Slump, the Eels - Daisies of the Galaxy

I could probably list a lot more, but thats off the top of my head.

kirk - i have both the albums you recommended. excellent stuff all around...if you get bored and want to post more selections feel free to do so.

keenween - like you i have most all the air and thievery albums...i just wanted to list my favorites in the interest of diversity.  i'm downloading the two radiohead-type albums you recommended on trial status right now...i will give them a listen and report back shortly.

update: keenween i would liken grandaddy more akin to death cab for cutie versus radiohead...this isn't to say i don't like deathcab because i certainly do, but i found the tracks more hit or miss. i definitely picked up a few of the tracks though, so thank you for them. i felt the same way about eels; i didn't fall in love with the album, but found some gems all the same. thank you for the recommendations.

All right, I know you won't have this.  It isn't Ambient, it's unique not a specific genre, give it a listen and let me know what you think.  The CD is well recorded and the bass digs deep.

Uberzone - Ideology
http://www.amazon.com/Ideology-%C3%9Cberzone/dp/B000TGGJRS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1250650721&sr=1-1

  • Without music, life would be a mistake.
If you like the Rach 3, then I'd recommend checking out #1 & #2, specifically the performances by Andsnes with Pappano conducting:

Cool...glad you like some of it. Its difficult for me to directly compare Radiohead to other bands, but most people I know who like Radiohead also like Grandaddy and the Eels. Deathcab is hit or miss for me as well. I'm not the biggest Radiohead fan, OK Computer is their standout for me. If I think of anything else I'll pass it on!

If you like Blue Trane, you will like these:

John Coltrane - Giant Steps
Miles Davis - 'Round Midnight' and 'Milestones,' maybe also 'Kind of Blue'
Lee Morgan - The Sidewinder
Kenny Dorham - Whistle Stop
Art Blakey - Free for All

massive attack - mezzanine
the roots - when things fall apart

Hot Chip "The Warning", "Made in the Dark"
Horrace Silver "Cape Verdian Blues"

  • Dutch and Dutch 8C's…yes they are that good!
Besides getting recommendations here, you can go to a site like allmusic.com for tons of info, reviews, etc...

One nice feature is that they will list some info that can tell you the following:

-  what bands influenced them
-  what bands are similar
-  what bands are followers

For example, if you look up Radiohead you can see the that they were influenced by Nirvana, The Smiths, REM, etc...  a few similar artists are Massive Attack and Muse and a couple followers are The Benjamins and the Dumbwaiters.

While you may or may not agree with all of these assessments, I do think it can provide an excellent starting point for expanding your collection.

Best of luck.

George

I also like to put bands into Pandora and see what it plays.

tyson - thanks for the recommendation. i really enjoyed a late night listen to the album; in particular no1-3 was the standout for me.

richidoo - i have the coltrane and miles albums; the latter three albums are all being downloaded as we speak..err type. :)

sts9fan - thanks for the suggestions. these are in my download queue as well. i should be able to report back this evening; if not tomorrow for sure. pandora seems like a great way to see where the other listener playlists flow to...i'm pretty excited to get to this.

zybar - thanks for pointing me in the allmusic direction.  the rhapsody service i utilize has a similar feature, but this has been largely a disappointment for me. i hope allmusic is a much better experience; from a cursory glance the reviews certainly seem a lot more detailed.

between this and some golf, i honestly can't think of a better way to spend my week off. thanks so much guys.

A couple of things popped into my head...  check out:

Electronic:
Death in Vegas - Dead Elvis
St. Germain - Tourist

Jazz/jazz-funk:
Medeski Martin and Wood - Uninvisable, Combustication, Friday Afternoon in the Universe...
Jimmy Smith - Root Down

Hip-hop (jazzy flava):
Tribe Called Quest - Midnight Mauraders, Low End Theory
Digable Planets - Blowout Comb, Reachin' (A New Refutation of Time and Space)
Guru - Jazzmatazz

Since you mentioned many albums that I own as well, you may already know about or enjoy these as well:

DJ Krush, (DJ) Greyboy, DJ Shadow, or any old MoWax comps like Heads, or Heads 2

Jazz is at the root of everything that I mentioned with a bit of funk thrown it for good measure.  Hard to go wrong with any of the Blue Note reissues from the early-mid sixties...  great time for straightforward Jazz, and Blue Note has put out a lot of excellent compilations that can serve as a springboard to get deeper into the artists.  Grant Green is one of my favorites, and I was introduced to his music through one of those comps.

Sounds like you already have a good sized collection of music, Pandora or LastFM do pretty well with their suggestions, if you stay on top of it and rate a lot of the songs that come up.  Allmusic Guide is a good source too, click on their genre links and browse through the top artist lists.  Amazon even does a fair job of recommending other artists if you throw a few CDs that you like into your shopping cart and browse what other people picked up when they purchased the same titles.

Cheers,
Greg

JP78,

Musical taste is so personal, but I feel like you would like Sneaker Pimps, Becoming X; and maybe South, From Here On In.

This is a great thread.

Airborn

JP78,
I think you should put these bands and albums into Allmusic or Amazon and see what comps. pop up.  I'll just list some other albums I have by the same artists...

Hopefully not repeats of others' suggestions. Hicks' choices are great!

So, based on my own collection, the suggestions have some similar feeling, structure or vocal style to the item you listed:

radiohead - the bends, ok computer / coldplay - a rush of blood to the head ~ I suggest: Death Cab for Cutie - Plans

depeche mode - ultra, violator ~ .. this one was the hardest for me since they are such icons and you selected much later albums than the classics I suggest: The Presets - Beams, and Unai - A Love Moderne

massive attack - mezzanine / portishead - dummy ~ I suggest: Emilia Torrini - Love In The Time Of Science, and Lamb - Between Darkness and Wonder

thievery corporation - the richest man in babylon ~ I suggest: all thievery corp!, Kruder & Dorfmeister - The K&D Sessions, Tosca - Suzuki or Delhi9,  and Groove Armada - Vertigo

air - premiers symptomes / rokysopp - melody a.m. ~ I suggest: Trentemoller-The Last Resort, and Lemon Jelly - Lost Horizons

and check out..... Sigur Ros

have fun, ed
