SOLD - Van Alstine Omega II 170 Power Amp - $150
« on: 24 Jul 2009, 06:16 pm »
For sale is a Van Alstine Omega II 170 Power Amp.

Amp is not working. Blew fuses.

It's old, dusty and rusty.

It sounds really nice when it was working many moons ago; put it away when it died.

If you can fix it - good, if not, can't help you as I have no idea how.

Needless to say it is sold as is.

$150

You should be able to get it rebuilt by AVA, into a current model Insight 170 for a little over $400:  http://www.avahifi.com/root/ordering_info/AVA_PRICES_1108.pdf

Call AVA for info

This amp is certainly repairable.  Did you try replacing all five fuses at once (four internal 3 amp quick blow, one external 4 amp slow blow)?

Often users overlook blown fuses mounted on the fuse clips on the audio boards, and replace only one of a blown pair.  This causes the fuse to blow quickly again.  The amp is VERY rugged and nearly always a blown fuse is all that is wrong with it.

Frank Van Alstine

I may have to try that.  Will go to Radio Shack and get the fuses. I will post the update.  If it works I would just keep it for spare.  Many thanks for the tip Mr. Van Alstine.

Tone Depth,

The upgrade is $699 for that circuit in the ST-120 chassis. Don't know why that chassis would be any more expensive than the others though.

Ron,

You are so correct, I must have picked off the AVA chassis, rather than the Dyna chassis from the cost sheet.  Thanks for your clarification!

Tone,

I bought it anyway. Curious to see what the problem is. I'll keep you posted on what I find.

I transplanted the amp to a cleaner chassis. When powered up, the B+ fuse for the left channel blew. Measured a dead short from the B+ line to ground. Culprit was a shorted reverse biased 1N4007 diode between the B+ line and ground. Replaced diode, put it all back together, and have been listening now for a half hour!

I have the 170Insight in the most mint Stereo 120 cabinet! It is very sweet sounding amplfier with plenty of muscle for a nice small package.
