Incorporating W frame into furniture
« on: 18 Jul 2009, 12:10 am »
My next speaker project is going to be the GR  Research OB subwoofer:
http://www.gr-research.com/pdf/obsub.pdf

Would it cause any problems to take the W frame and add storage shelving on the top or bottom in order to make it also functional furniture and blend into the room better?

Thanks,
Don

Aren't you going to want those away from the wall?

Yes, but where I have in mind for it I don't want it to look like a speaker just sitting there.

If you want to minimize vibrations, I wonder if you may want to consider the Linkwitz-style W baffle - in which the drivers move push-pull, in the arrangement shown there is still a force component that doesn't cancel.

Even so, I don't know how well that would work for your planned use - you may have to build them and try them. Perhaps consider decoupling the sub cabinet from the furniture around it? I think I saw someone do something like that here recently.

I cannot think of any reason that an OB sub could not be incorporated into a coffee table, so long as you don't mind a woofer basket hanging out of the middle of it!

I used to put an Ikea LACK table over the top of this, and it masked the ugliness some...

Not a problem, just a consideration:
A dipole woofer will excite vertical room modes least when standing on the floor. If you raise it up considerably, you may choose 1/5 or 1/3 of the room height to get the most homogeneous distribution of the vertical modes.
