LS9 Build
« on: 7 Jul 2009, 04:35 pm »
Hi All, In my first post I wanted to share in a project inspired by Danny's work in the past. I owned a pair of ephipany 21/21's some time back and thought WOW these are cool but need a little more bass. With a little research, I found the mighty LS9 that Danny sells as a kit. I just happen to be quite good friends with a guy who ownes a "custom shop" and builds great cabinets. I thought you'all might like to see the LS9's go togther. Here are the first pics as we glued them togther. All parts are milled on a CNC router. A tight box makes for good sound you know! The outer box is 1" medite and the braces were 3/4". The tweeter box interior is 1/2" then lined with weighted Vinyl.

bottom of the LS9 where the base/crossover fits. The inserts are for 3/8" bolts that hold on the base.

I chose Zebra wood veneer.

Vertical stripes make us look thin no?

Note the tape on the BG8's. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!

I've had the LS9's up since the weekend. My system consists of A CEC transport, Dodson 217 MKII DAC, a Parasound JC2 preamp and a pair of Krell FPM 300MC amps. I use a mix harmonic tech and XLO interconnects and right now I'm using an older pair of Audioquest Midnight Speaker cables. My room is 14.5' w x 21'd x 9.5' h slab on grade.

My first impressions are WoooooHoooo!!!!! These things rock! quick punchy bass down to 25' HZ and Danny is a wizard with the BG neo 8's. ultra transparent mids and highs with natural dynamics. Imaging is just freaky good. This type of sound can't be achieved with small loudspeakers. I wish it were winter so I could spend more time listening.

I'll posts some gear and room pics later and post info on any changes as they break in and I tweek my rig to maximize performance.

KCI, did you get the new email from AV123?  They want more money after waiting for 3 years and payment up front after no communication for years that is unless you called them and then they would not even be up front with you.  But I digress  :duh: :nono:  :o
Great looking and I 'm sure sounding speakers Nickd, YOu are both a lucky and talented dog  aa

playntheblues,

Oh yeah, I got that sorry email as well as several others they have been sending out lately.  Sorry business approach ole Shifty seems to be practicing there. Sure glad someone is getting to enjoy their nines! But the real kicker is that I opted for a set of the  CLS-9's, cashed in all my vacation, sold some stuff and worked my butt off for extra cash and paid for them in full almost two years ago, still sitting here as one empty handed sad fellow....

They look sweet Nickd, if you need a baby sitter I'm sure you'll have people lined up offering their services!

Would be interested to hear your impressions of these vs 20-21's

the 20/21's were very good but in my room I thought they only sounded correct with a pair of subs helping out on the bottom. I also got tired of a chesty quality from the lower mid bass that came across as a coloration in male voice. not bad mind you but you know us audiophiles. aa

The LS 9's have a lot more bass in and play deeper too (25hz). They are a warm sounding speaker but there is FAR less coloration in the upper bass region. They are not perfect in this region but for the money I am amazed how good they are. The woofers in the Magico products are cleaner but they cost $300.00 ea wholesale. I would hate to buy 24 of them.

The LS9 is a newer design and you can here it. Refinement is king in audio. Also the boxes I built use better material (american made 1" MDF46) so they may be less resonant. just some thoughts.
