CD's you want to be issued on vinyl
« on: 5 Jul 2009, 03:26 pm »
Since I rediscovered the wonders of vinyl LPs I have wanted some enterprising record company to issue many cd's on LP.  What cd's would you like to have released on vinyl?

Here's a short list to get it started.

John Scofield - Quiet
Los Lobos - Kiko
Lucinda Williams - Car Wheels on a Gravel Road

All of Sufjan Stevens.. Nick Drake...
However, the caveat is that they need to actually know how to master vinyl.. John Mayer vinyl is among the worst sounding mastering/pressing I've ever heard.  Just because it's on vinyl doesn't make it automatically better.. the person doing it has to actually care, have an ear, and the talent and tools to make a good record.  It's a tall ask.

Good response from Carlman. Also, some of your favorite CD's may not be produced to a good standard. Stevehoffman.tv will list threads with opinions on which CD release is the "best." Often with differing opinions.

assuming superior mastering/pressing:

tool - 10,000 days
tweaker - the attraction to all things unknown
tweaker - 2 a.m. wakeup call
skinny puppy - the process
skinny puppy - the greater wrong of the right
ohgr - welt
prick - the wreckard
16 horsepower - low estate
16 horsepower - sackcloth 'n ashes

if we're talking about oop reissues, then the list grows longer

Very interesting question and with a twist to the equation at least is that,  taking into account of the music i normally listen to / buy today, (black keys, m83, St vincent , Reginia spector)with the resurgence of vinyl is all being released on vinyl which is a good thing but the problem is a lot of the music  was recorded and mastered in the digital world ie there never was a analog copy. Which i find means that there is not a big difference between the cd and the lp. I have a copy of the new fever ray cd and lp you would be hard pressed to tell the difference between the two, which is not the case on older stuff. With all that being said i'll take two Nick cave albums

Let love in and murder ballads

I'd like to see;

Pat Metheny's newer stuff though they are getting ready to release his latest on vinyl.
Esbjorn Svensson Trio
Rachell Farrell
Gabe Dixon Band
Kosheen
Eric Johnson's newer stuff

There are tons more but these would be at the top of my list.

His CD's are horrible sounding too (not the music necessarily...the awful mp3 quality).  I'm a total cheapo and hang on or trade in all my vinyl or CD's for credit eventually at my local shop...the lone John Mayer CD bought I literally cracked in half as I could not bare it another moment in my possession.

I think it was the only piece of music I ever did that to.

The guy simply does not care at all about sound quality :(

That's funny, John... I got the cd and thought it was bad.. spent the big $ on new vinyl only to learn it was even worse! :duh:  I lump John Mayer in with folks like David Gray and call them 'compression artists'.. I think they just plug into their ibook and hit the big red dot and let the software fix the mistakes. ;)

The point about everything being in the digital domain is a great point.  It does have that 'digitally perfected' sound like cd's.  It's not whole and natural like my older albums..  If I spin a Chicago or Ohio Players album from the 70's it definitely has a completely different sound than something new like the latest Dave Matthews LP.

Strangely, the Icky Thump (White Stripes) album sounds like it could be analog... not sure if it's because of all the distortion and such.. but it sounds pretty good... and non-digital.

There are several "classic" CDs I wish were avaible. Queen-Innuendo is one of them. I'd also like to have XTC-Nonesuch, too. All the stuff by Brian Setzer Orchestra would be fun.

Also:

Thomas Dolby-Gate to the Minds Eye.
Billy Idol-Cyberpunk.
Freddie Jones Band-Waiting for the Night.
Camel-Coming of Age.

Cool. I'd love to have The Way Up on vinyl. I'd also like to have Secret Story on vinyl. The sound on CD is killer - I can't imagine how good it would be on vinyl.

Dave Matthhews back catalogue would be cool.
Porcupine Tree would be cool to own also, but I generally would listen to this on headphones and not on the main rig mostly.
Some more recent jazz albums would also top my list, but those are one off's - Roy Hargrove's Earfood, Ray Swings Basie Swings (now that would be Fremerous!)

Enjoy,
Bob

That was my experience too. To me the LP superiority is really relative to what period/genre.  I have some 70's classic rock LPs that are far and away better than the CD counterparts but that is not really true of more modern releases.

I second the
Tool 10,000 Days

I'll bet by the early 80's, almost every LP printed was recorded in the digital domain.

That's probably why I was so happy listening to Strawb's Bursting at the Seams last night. And Lene Lovich's Stateless British release on red vinyl. Analog all the way!

Paul,

I still can't blame the medium. I've heard fantastic music in both domains. But when it's fucked up, it sounds bad in either domain. That is for sure, and I think you will agree.

Me too.  I still think vinyl has more potential, or atleast more often realized.  Unfortunately my taste in music leans more towards modern, which means more often LPs aren't worth the premium they fetch.
