No worries guys,This amps got plenty of awsome bottom!  I listened to 2 songs while at Arts on his 9's and it was awsome. All I got from Art at that point was, man good bass and WOW!  I left at that point and came home.

I'll have more thoughts to share in a few days, but quick impression over a few hours yesterday and today is this is a terrific little amp that is dead dead, really dead quiet, has oodles of detail, great tonality, images and stages well, and delivers good extension on both ends of the spectrum.  It has that signature Dodd sound with nice warmth and weight, but also good air and sparkle.  I'll get into some more detail after a few more days, but it really is a little sweetheart piece of gear.  At the cost being targeted, it looks like it will be a terrific bargain.

It's a prototype, so I have no way to comment on fit and finish, but Gary usually comes up with good looking gear so no worries there to speak of.

It can be overdriven in my system, I'm guessing due to the "harder to drive than they appear on paper" nature of my arrays and the size of my room, and Gary said he could make higher powered versions as needed, but it delivers nicely into the high 80's and handles both complex and simple musical structures quite easily at reasonable listening levels.  Some of the higher efficiency speakers asked about earlier in this thread, in the right size room, should have no problems at all getting solid, even pronounced, listening levels.

Best amp ever?  I'm not a believer in best anything in our subjective hobby, but kudos to Gary on this design, I'm looking forward to some more fun with this baby in the next few days.  It's really unique and sounds quite excellent.

P.S.  Yes, the bass was very solid with it.

The little battery powered tube amp (also needing a name) sounded just like my Doddzilla's. I mean it sounded just like them to a T. However, the noise floor was notably lower. There was clearly the Blackest of Black backgrounds. This gave us the impression of better resolution. It was really just unbelievable. This tiny little amp was the clear winner in this comparison.

Nice....having heard those "Big Blues"....that's some feat !!

Good luck Gary.... :thumb:

Best amp ever?

Yea, I have to agree that there never really is a best ever. I should have added a ? at the end of the thread title as it was meant more as a leading question than a statement.

For a whole lot of applications though, it could well be the best sounding amp out there regardless of cost. It certainly tops my list of all time best values in all of audio.

Gary,

after you get all your ducks lined up, any chance of a demo making it's way into circulation at some point?  I'd love to hear what this little gem sounds like. aa

Any thoughts on this Quad:

What is more important in this amp....the input or output tubes?

Thanks in advance:)

Morganc,

I don't have one of these (but will be very hard pressed to not get one if they ever go back in production), but on my Carina -- a SE EL84 amp with a 6dj8 family driver, and after being through some of the best of the best NOS tubes, I've got to say the new production Genalex Gold Lion N709/el84s and the gold lion e88cc are incredible tubes.  Jim McShane is the man to talk to about thees.

Gary,  just curious why in this whole thread nobody has speculated that the super low output impedance of an SMPS is one of the probable reasons for such clean bass and great dynamics.  Very much like the original miniwatts in that regard.

Hopefully there will be more of these in the future.
