Buying records at Best Buy
« on: 24 Jun 2009, 10:09 pm »
Well I have been telling friends how cool it is just to walk into a normal retail store and see records for sale. Last night I was passing Best Buy and decided to see what they had in LP's. I came away with Dave Matthews Band-Big Whiskey And The Groogrux King and Guns N' Roses-Chinese Democracy. At $13.99 and $ 19.99 respectively I am very happy. :thumb: They are both double album, gatefold covers with the GNR being 180 gram. :thumb:

Yeah, same here, got DMB's new Lp for $11.99 couple weeks back. It's a very good pressing ...except for side four.....surface noise and sibalence that shouldn't be there. I went back, exchanged, same thing.....anybody else notice this ??

Are they now in ALL Best Buys?

I went to my two local ones in the past month, and both did not have vinyl there then.

I'm in/near San Francisco, where we have a couple thriving indie vinyl chains, so I'd think they'd have put them around here by now

I, too, look forward to buying new records there....and gaining Best Buy Reward dollars, too   I have not purchased records from a chain store since Korvette's left Mid-Island Mall in Hicksville, LI (for you LI'ers and folks old enough to remember Korvettes )

ahhhhhhh, Price Code 'G'  :thumb:

In the deepest recesses of my pot-scarred mind I remember those price codes (listed on some board above)

G was probably $6.99 or something

Oh yeah I remember going into any department store to see if they had this or that LP or 45. One Sat. afternoon in the mid 80's I was walking thru Caldor's with a buddy and there was a big box in the middle of the isle. I looked down and saw White Album with this sticker on it I was like"DUDE!!! Check it out!" Yes, that's a white vinyl, direct metal mastered German pressing. With the raised lettering "THE BEATLES" cover and the 4 pix and poster with Apple labels. SCORE one for the goodguys! :thumb: Someday I'll ask that freind if he wants to sell his collection so I can have a backup copy.

They have the records on a gondila near the DVD/CD section and a few mixed into the New Releases section. Ask often and have freinds do the same if they don't yet have any. I read somewhere that they were going full bore into Lps but only see 6-8 at any given time.

Best Buy's Chinese Democracy is a bit misleading.  Its available elsewhere on vinyl.  Not sure what's exclusive to Best Buy about it.  Maybe a digital download?

As mentioned before, FYE has a bigger vinyl selection than Best Buy.  At least the FYE I was in last (Albany, NY)

Best Buys Yet....EJ Korvette! (or so the commercial jingle went)

There was another record store in Mid Island mall that had records a bit cheaper than Roosevelt Field (Sam Goody was my main mall place). And the slot car place was to die for!

Didja go to the record store on Old Country Rd in Westbury, a warehouse right next to Coronet's where Wantagh Parkway exit was located? I can still remember finding the last copy of The Move Looking On, possibly the last copy in America!

In he vaguest reaches of my tattered brain I think I remember the one you are talking about and may have visited it.

I generally went to the one on Old Country Road in Hicksville () that was housed in an old Wetson's restaurant building.  It may have been in Westbury even...was that the same one you are referring to?

Alas, I'm actually old enough to have made sales calls on Mays and Alexanders....Korvettes went belly up a few years before I graduated college, I think (as did Great Eastern!)

That was Titus Oaks....now a Dunkin Donuts...that was considered Hicksville.. :?

The other that was mentioned....were guys that worked at Titus...moved down the road to the small shopping plaza next to Wantagh Parkway...and changed the name...which I have forgotten. But both are gone...and the Coronet is now a Century 21 department store.

Mineola still has Mr. Cheapo's....Lp's,Cd's,DVD's....both new and used.

Edit....The forgotten store name.....Music Arcade.

Sorry to hijack this thread with Long Island memories. Lonewolf, John and I should just have a reunion somewhere since we obviously passed each other like ships in the night way back when!

No hijacking here, not to worry. I used to go to Great Eastern on Rt 22 in Springfield to get fishing supplies. Across the highway, to the west, was Harmony House. HH was forgotten not long after Platter Puss arrived on the middle isle about an eighth of mile to the east. Next to PP was Tech HiFi where I bought my Ohm L's...Now let the hijacking begin!

BTW..There's an FYE on 22 I'll have to check out.
