Rick, would the 70-20XR work as the T in an MTM with dual 7-inch Revelators, say in a ported floorstander, or would a different Raal model work better in that application? 8)

I usually suggest 5.5" or smaller drivers for a MTM like this one with the 5" Illuminator and 70-20XR. You can use a 7" provided you don't mind a narrow vertical sweetspot. If you consider a 7" MTM make sure the manufacturer can supply vertical response graphs.

Just a guess, but if you wanted dual 7" revelators in a floor standing system, why not think about something like the TRT with the 70-20 as the tweeter? I know I did, it's just that my budget this time could only afford 1 revelator per speaker and not 2.

Rick,

I know you usually don't say a lot about the sound of your speakers, except to say that they all sound good , but can you share any impressions you might have about the difference in sound between the Prestigio and the Scan Speak Illuminator MTM in the photo above?

Chuck

Welcome back Rick.

General question, what's the advantage of MTM?  To control vertical dispersion? With a ribbon tweeter having god vertical control, is it still beneficial? Increased sensitivity maybe?
Thanks
Rich

Will you still have those Thursday of next week?  I'll be in the area and would love to come by and give them a listen if possible.

Once I do some more listening I'll let you know. I also plan to demo the new design for some of the AC members if possible before the pair ships.

The MTM does have more controlled vertical dispersion but how it behaves depends on the drivers and crossover design. The shorter ribbons like the 70-20XR actually have fairly wide vertical coverage up to about 10K so most of the MTM's vertical effect is due to the woofers or mids. The crossover design also effects the coverage as well.

You gain some sensitivity and output with the second woofer due to the mutual coupling and lower impedance. The problem with the larger woofers and increased center-to-center spacing is that the woofers start to beam and decouple lower in frequency. The tweeter then cannot go low enough to fill in the response and is really susceptible to being overdriven if the crossover point is too low.
