We're all used to bringing ' a dish to pass '. Just let us know what you need. Same goes for equipment. There's such a variety in our group that we can probably get pretty much anything you want to see/hear/etc.Looking forward to it. Don't forget to post/PM specifics as to time/address/etc.Bryan
I would like to RSVP for this. Welcome to the group.
A big thank you Mac and Sue for hosting a great gettogether!Well, to all that weren't able to make it, you missed a delicious spread and a fun tri-level event. Mac's house is a split level so there were three floors and 5 areas for hi-fi. There was an audio system on the main floor where multiple speaker systems were rotated through, the main home theatre on the next level down w/subwoofer and various towers to switch back and forth (with a cute little tubed Shanling CD player system in a side area), and another home theatre system on the next level down plus a nifty little office system based on a Jolida integrated tubed amp.The highlight of course was the Emotiva group from Kentucky who brought in a plethora of electronics and speakers to listen to. For me, the best time was listening to the owner of Emotiva when he was 'holding court' afterwards and explained the changing nature of the audio marketing system. The old business model of manufacture/importer/distributor, manufacturer's representative, retailer that I grew up with decades ago, which provided the marketplace with such a rich diversity of quality and prodcuts in the past - has morphed into an unholy oligarchy in which 'big box' stores basically run the show via their purchasing and marketing power. The audio manufacturer is facing a huge market entry level barrier, in that they can't compete with the marketing power of the big box stores to bring products to the consumer. The big box stores don't give a rat's ass about audio quality and are interested strictly in profit margin, period. Most people think of money as merely a medium of exchange for trading goods. It does perform this function, but there is also a higher and more important less visable function, that exists when there is a true market economy. The flow of money acts as an information channel which tells the producer what the consumer both wants and doesn't want. The money flow in a true free market economy marketplace communicates the consumers demands of quality, quantity, location, and price. The big box stores act as a communication wall between the manufacturer and the consumer both through the fact that its dictates to the manufacturer in the same manner as a 'command economy' (as opposed to a true free market economy) and by that fact that it removes such a large portion of the money stream. Less money flow equals less information. This leaves the consumer with lower quality and less selection, similar to various "command economies", whether they are based on socialism, fascism, or communism. Somebody other than the consumer is telling the manufacturer what the consumer wants. Fortunately the internet has created an information end run around the big box stores which are an impediment to true market forces. The internet reduces the market entry barrier costs to the manufacturer and has the potential (if the manufacture figures out how to utilize it) to vastly reduce the distribution and marketing expense. *IF* the manufacture sucessfully utilizes the internet as a replacement to the old 'manufacterer's representative - distributor - retailer' component of the marketing chain, then all of the money that used to be consumed in that portion of the production-consumption chain is freed up to improve the product quality, increase product variety, and to reduce the price to the consumer. Emotiva has figured out how to utilize the internet, in spades. Also Emotiva was handing out door prizes of Emotiva clothing, keychain lights, and that type of stuff. BUT! there was also a drawing, two drawings actually. One drawing for a free pair of speakers and one drawing for free electronics! Don't you wish you came now?Ken
My man. My customer, my man! Welcome aboard, Mac.
