New speaker decision time

OK, so I'm not a newcomer to this hobby, I just have no idea where this should go now  :dunno:

I've been living with my RAW HT8 speakers for a couple of years now, probably the longest I have kept a speaker. I am now in search of something new. I want something with a larger, fuller sound. I'm also wanting something without a ribbon tweeter. I love it most times, but it really let's me know when I'm listening to a sub-par recording. I do plan to keep the HT8 around and like most folks, money is a little tight right now.

I am thinking of going used and there are a few speakers that have caught my eye. There is a pair of semi-local Daedalus DA1's for sale at a very attractive price. There is also a pair of Silverline Sonata III's up for sale on this site. I have not heard either speaker so I am hoping for some comments from people who have heard one or the other or both.

My room is 14' x 18' x 8'H and although fully treated with GIK traps, really sucks up the bass. I would be driving the speakers with a Butler TDB amp and using a Modwright Transporter as my source. Any information you have on these speakers would be appreciated. Oh yeah, my max budget is about 3k.

Hi MCA,

I can't help but pass on my assessment of some great Aussie made speakers. I don't own them as I can't afford them at the moment. The Vsonic speakers are in a kit form made by Aksa who make Aspen Amplifiers (Aspen Amplifiers are a sponsor of this site too!) in Melbourne.  Refer to www.aksaonline.com   for the contact. I was in the Hi Fi industry for 25 years and I was overwhelmed by the all round performance of these small transmissionline speakers when I heard them. From the full bass to the top end they offer a seamless sound. Imaging, detail, soundstage, particularly the slam and attack is very impressive.  By the way the Vsonic speakers have a Peerless dome tweeter which is one of the best sounding under the "funny money" end of the market. From web site info they do make fully built speakers on order.

I'm sure that these speakers which would easily retail in the $8000 bracket. If you decided to build these easy to assemble speakers yourself you will be well under your budget.  By the way there will soon be a matched transmissionline woofer to seamlessly extend the bass of the Vsonics down to the low 20hz range.

Just food for thought,

Cheers,

Sparkie

The "warmer" of the two would be the Daedalus, but the Silverline has a bit better bass.
Both are good speakers.... :thumb:

You can check with Jim/DoubleUgly...he owns a Daedalus pair....and Grant/Tvad is the Silverline owner.

I heard a pair at a meet driven by some Manley monos and a VTL pre with a Linn table and an I don't remember cartridge.  Got to hear some of my own records.  The owner had given them a lot of love I can tell you that.  MIT cables and "I don't know what all" (Brother Dave Gardner).  They were right as that rain and in an enormous room and could handle anything came down the pike.  The little and the large.  Pristine with wide dynamics.  Post some feedback at some point.  Happy listening.

Chris,

I was about to describe things in the same way, but in an opposite manner.   :o

Both are good speakers and enjoyable to listen to.

Good luck Mike.
