Got a new pair of VMPS RM40's and am finally hearing bass for the first time ever.  Give me some suggestions of recordings with a lot of good bass.  Anything but rock or metal.

kraftwerk's "electric cafe"

nusrat ali fateh khan & michael brooks' "night song"  (the synth bass on this one is really amazing)

black uhuru's "now"

for acoustic upright bass - jerry douglas/russ barenberg/edgar meyer's "skip, hop & wobble"

"night song" and "now" have actually knocked an opened websters unabridged dictionary from its perch atop one of my subs...   :o

I like this Stanley Clarke CD, but don't you think the recording is a little bit compressed?  To my ears, it's got a pretty typical "late 80s digital recording sound".  I hadn't played it in years, but after recently getting my speaker line and wanting to test out some bass recordings myself, I pulled it out...compared to more recent or older recordings, I was disappointed in the recording's relative lack of depth...

Yes, but Stanley is a great player. And that album came to mind. I think everyone has their own picks, and there's a lot to chose from. Now if your looking for guitar, Jeff Beck would be ONE of my picks. Plus , he's done some work with Clarke.  Check out "School Days". 8)

Yes,
Bella Fleck is a great addition to my library.  Thanks to AC, I never would have heard them.

I'm not much into CD's, mostly vinyl. :nono: But if you want bass and Stanley Clarke(before he sold out to R&B) get the following:

Stanley Clarke "Stanley Clarke" Billy Connors on guitar(1st RTF axe man)
Stanley Clarke "Journey to Love" Hello Jeff w/Jeff Beck on guitar
Return to Forever "Romantic Warrior" W/an unknown 19 year old guitarist by the name of Al DiMeola
John Abercrombie "Timeless" w/Jan Hammer The song "Lungs"

I saw Stanley last year in Chicago(The Abbey Pub) and he played all his old stuff. I miss that kind of music from him..

Well back to work :(

Holly Cole's "Temptation" has some great acoustic bass on it---doesn't call attention to itself  (like subwoofery bass), but it's great when speakers reproduce what's there.  It would be similar to Patricia Barber's "Companion."

For more jazz titles with good bass:

Victor Whooten "What Did He Say?" (he's the bass player for Bela Fleck)
Bill Frisell "Gone Like A Train"
Most of the Telarc or Chessky titles with Ron Carter

ian, i dunno if this was directed at my post recommending nusrat ali fateh khan & michael brooks, where i mentioned the bass is synthesized (i think?), but this is definitely *not* someting likely to appeal to anyone into that car-thumpin' ting.  nusrat is egyptian, and he sings like it  - this album has a wery strong middle-eastern flavor...

fwiw,

doug s., who only listens to the wail of an alfa v6 when driving...  (or the throb of a 351 cleveland when i take the pantera out!) :D
